Knollwood News
January 24, 2021
We continue our study of the Gospel of John. The apostle, writing at the end of the first century, gives his account of the life and ministry of Jesus. His prime reason for writing, as he states in chapter 20, is that we “may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing have life in his name” (John 20:31).

Each week, we invite you to read the chapter(s) that will be the focus of the next Sunday’s message. This coming week, the reading is John, chapter 17.
Q&A Meetings with Moises Altamirano

Pastor Mark sent out a letter last week informing you that the Board of Elders at Knollwood are presenting Moises Altamirano to the church as a candidate for Associate Pastor. We are excited about the possibility of Moises joining the staff and serving the body in this position.

Listed below are the opportunities to get to know Moises and ask any questions you might have. You can also submit questions that you would like answered to Pastor Chris. Email him: chris@knoll.org.

  • Sunday, January 24 – in-person interaction time following the morning service
  • Wednesday, January 27 – Zoom call at 7:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, January 31 – Zoom call at 7:00 p.m.

Go to knoll.org/ap to register for the Zoom calls

On Sunday, February 14, there will be a vote by members whether Moises Altamirano will be hired as Associate Pastor.

There will be two ways to participate in the vote:

  1. If you attend the morning service, there will be a short business meeting after the service to vote on a motion from the Board of Elders to offer the position to Moises.
  2. If you do not want to participate in person, you may drive through the parking lot between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to cast your vote. (The Bylaws of Knollwood Community Church do not allow for absentee or proxy voting.)

Please be in prayer for this important decision. Your vote matters! Thank you.

Mission Update: Jim & Diane Dempsey - CRU Headquarters
Jim & Diane Dempsey serve respectively as the Associate Executive Director of Development for the Campus Ministry and Financial Analyst for the Campus Ministry of Cru. Both lead out in setting direction for all 2000+ Campus staff in the U.S. and all digital and other evangelistic strategies worldwide. Here’s a link sharing a few lives that were changed this past year: Reach the World

When the pandemic hit in March, Cru staff worldwide immediately pivoted to digital and other forms of communication with students. The evangelistic website, EveryStudent.com – which was already reaching tens of millions -- became even more important. Here’s a recent story of a life changed through EveryStudent.com – from a country where 98% of the population is Muslim:

“Hamza is a student who heard the gospel online during his country’s COVID-19 shutdown period. As a result of online conversations, without any face-to-face interaction with a Believer, he indicated a decision to place his faith in Christ. Amazingly, his story isn’t an entirely unique one. Staff and volunteers throughout our area engaged in months of digitally-focused ministry and saw tremendous fruit. Not all of those conversations led to in-person relationships as countries opened back up, but Hamza’s did.”

“Omar, a Cru staff member from Hamza’s country, had been discipling him over social media messaging during the shutdown and invited him to continue in person when it became possible. When they met in person for the first time, Omar was amazed. The depth of Hamza’s thoughts and questions proved that he had been studying the Bible and practicing the things Omar had taught him online.”

“In that first in-person meeting, Omar encouraged Hamza to begin trying to share his faith using the training Omar had given him. To Omar’s further amazement, by their next meeting, Hamza had already spoken to four of his friends about Christ! Hamza is continuing to go through discipleship with Omar.”

What an exciting report and the men, women and families of Knollwood played a role in his decision and growth by helping our efforts!!!

Our prayer requests are:
  1. For Jim as he leads a team of 40 at HQ and throughout the U.S. acquiring the resources needed to equip our local leaders for ministry.
  2. For Diane as she equips and advises our National Leaders in areas related to income and expenses in order to plan for all strategic and priority programs.
  3. For our local team leaders as they navigate ministry during a pandemic.

Ice-Skating Fun

We had a great time ice-skating at Reston Town Center! It was cold but we warmed up fast once we got skating! It was a great bonding experience trying our best not to fall or knock anyone over! So proud of everyone for working so hard to gain confidence in ice-skating and for encouraging each other to keep going! Happy Birthday to Izzie Ledbetter who skated with us on her birthday and showed us some of her professional ice-skating moves; she was awesome!!
