In 2013, a Silicon Flatirons conference gathered stakeholders to address the escalating issue of Radio Frequency (RF) noise pollution—a type of interference that can disrupt a wide range of wireless communications. They offered strategies to quantify and mitigate its impact.
A decade has passed, and the RF landscape has evolved significantly. The surge in wireless device usage has intensified our reliance on wireless internet connections. Concurrently, the adoption of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, which emit low-level RF noise, has become more widespread. Moreover, the influx of electric vehicles (EVs) and their charging stations are contributing new RF noise sources.
Acknowledging these changes, Silicon Flatirons convened a Roundtable in June 2023 in Washington, D.C., hosted by DLA Piper. This gathering of esteemed experts from government sectors, industries, and academic institutions aimed to reassess the state of radio spectrum pollution. Adhering to the Chatham House Rule to encourage open dialogue, participants reviewed findings from the 2013 conference and engaged in four focused sessions to analyze the current RF noise climate and formulate forward-looking recommendations.
The 2023 Roundtable report provides a synthesis of the discussions, highlighting key points from each session, identifying overarching themes, and proposing directions for future research.
To explore the detailed findings and recommendations from the recent Roundtable, as well as to see how they compare to the conclusions drawn in 2013, access the reports below:
