JUST THE FACTS: Florida Vaccine Mandates

Since last month’s announcement that the state of Florida will propose removing vaccine mandates for school aged children, there has been a great deal of confusion surrounding what is actually happening including the process for removing vaccine mandates, the timing of such decisions, and the overall efficacy of vaccines for children. This confusion includes questions from patients about whether they should or are required to vaccinate their children, and inquiries from members about what has or will actually change with the current Florida mandates. The following Q&A has been developed to help Florida’s family physicians understand the facts and provide the best guidance possible for their patients.

Medicaid Modernization: New Provider Enrollment System Forthcoming

Medicaid_ health concept. Stethoscope_ syringe and pills on grey background. Selective focus image.

The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) is launching a new provider enrollment system in early 2026 as part of the AHCA Enterprise modernization. This modernization will streamline enrollment, renewal, and account maintenance, making the process faster, easier, and more secure for Medicaid providers.

 In preparation, providers should:

  • Complete pending enrollments and open renewals in the current Provider Enrollment Wizard.
  • Review and update account information in the Florida Medicaid Secure Web Portal.
  • Subscribe to Florida Medicaid Health Care Alerts for updates.

In support of the modernization effort, AHCA will launch a provider learning series designed to help you successfully transition to the new provider enrollment system in AHCA Enterprise. The series will provide information and guidance about upcoming changes and help you prepare to create your new AHCA Enterprise account and enroll in the new provider system. As launch day approaches in early 2026, AHCA will share everything you need to know through Florida Medicaid Health Care Alerts, including when new preparation tools become available.

AAFP's Family Doc Focus Article featuring FAFP Resident Board President, Dr. Del Carter

“I was open to everything family medicine offered,” said Carter, one of a dozen residents recognized with the AAFP’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education during the recent Family Medicine Experience in Anaheim, Calif. “As residency went on, I found I was most excited when I was going to the hospital, night shift specifically. We’re seeing patients at their sickest point when they’re being admitted from the ER. You’re setting the tone for their admission and determining what is going on with this patient. It’s intense and requires a lot of critical thinking. I really enjoy that. I’m a night owl, so that works out in my favor.”

ACHIEVING HEALTH EQUITY

THROUGH RACE-NEUTRAL SPIROMETRY

In 2023, ATS issued new clinical recommendations calling for the use of race-neutral equations in spirometry, a change representing an evolution in thought supported by recent evidence.

A race-neutral reference equation provides better or equivalent relationships between spirometry and symptoms, airway structure, emphysema, and functional capacity.

Classifying patients by race alone drives thinking away from the examination of other social, environmental, and genetic factors as drivers of disease. Genetic associations with pulmonary function do not provide evidence for the use of race or ethnicity in PFT interpretation.
