Education, Prevention, and Mitigation

for Violence in the Workplace

You have the Right to Defend Yourself and Others.

The best self-defense is not to be there when the attack takes place. This is primarily done by using time and distance and proper de-escalation techniques. Is this always possible? Unfortunately- no, it isn’t. There are times when physical interventions/self-defense are unavoidable. Proper training and the understanding of self-defense are paramount for staff who work in industries with risk factors for physical violence.

Self-Defense: Is the right to use reasonable force to protect oneself or members of one’s staff/family from bodily harm from the attack of an aggressor if you have reason to believe that you or they are in danger.

Defense Code of Conduct:

Time & Distance

The concept of time or distance illustrates that having time or distance can give us distance or time from a violent person, place, event, or thing.

De-Escalation

The best defense is not being there (time/distance); however, this is not always possible. Therefore, de-escalation is the next best defense for escalating behavior.

Lawful Use of Defense

In order to be lawful in your defense of yourself and others, you must have a basic understanding of some legal definitions and how they apply to self-defense/use-of-force and the legal system.

Use of Force

A term that describes the right of an individual or authority to settle conflicts or prevent certain actions by applying measures to either: dissuade another party from a particular course of action…or physically intervene to stop or control them.

Rules of Engagement

Anytime self-defense or force is used to defend yourself or others, it must be last resort and reasonable, and you must be able to articulate what you did, why you did it, and how you did it.

Policies and Procedures

Ultimately, any self-defense or use of force is based on the agency’s policies and procedures. Effective training for staff incorporates agency policies and procedures for self-defense and the use of force.
