Citizenship Essay Contest
Virginia PTA is committed to promoting a sense of citizenship and responsibility in the lives of our children – tomorrow’s leaders. To demonstrate the value that Virginia PTA places on good citizenship, we are proud to sponsor, support, and encourage Virginia students to write an essay for the 2021 Citizenship Essay Contest. This year’s selected theme is “How can we stand together when we are so far apart?”

WHO CAN ENTER?
All Virginia students in grades K through 12 presently enrolled in schools with active PTA/PTSAs in Good Standing may enter. A non-graded Special Writer Division is available and limited to students whose physical, cognitive, or mental health challenges meet ADA guidelines. Qualifying students entering this division create their own essay but may receive non-artistic accommodation and assistance from an adult.

CRITERIA:
In all categories, adherence to the theme as it relates to CITIZENSHIP, originality, clarity, thought and skill in standard written English will be judged. The theme must be used as the essay title and may not be altered in any way.

Submissions are due February 1, 2021

Call for Nominations
Edison PTSA is looking for a few good parents, teachers and students to serve on the Edison PTSA Board as an officer or committee chair for the 2021-22 school year.

National PTA provides these 5 reasons why becoming a PTSA leader is so important for our high school students:

  • To Inspire. Inspiring school-wide engagement during the teen years is an important role your PTSA can play!
  • To Prepare for College and Careers. As a PTSA, we can help improve College and Career Readiness among students.
  • To Promote Good Mental and Physical Health. Not only can we host a Healthy Hydration Event in celebration of Healthy Lifestyles Month, Edison PTSA can also lead the effort in establishing a school wellness committee or encouraging students to get involved in an existing one.
  • To Help Ensure Safety. As we all know, middle and high school is a time when youth become increasingly susceptible to negative influences. Edison PTSA can help promote safe practices among youth by sharing important resources and hosting safety-related events.
  • To Advocate. Having a PTSA is a great opportunity to elevate student voices in advocacy efforts at the county, state and national level.

All talents, skill levels and levels of commitment are welcome and all positions are accepting nominations - President, President-Elect, VP Communication, VP Membership, Treasurer and Secretary.

If interested, please send an email indicating your preferred role to nominations@edisonhsptsa.org.

Nominations are due by May 1st
Elections will be held at our May PTSA Meeting
