Earlier this week, I was privileged to attend an excellent evening program about the BDS movement and the issues that current college students are facing on campus. BDS stands for "Boycott, Divest and Sanction," and refers to a 15-year effort to delegitimize Israel through economic boycott. On college campuses, the efforts of organizations such as "Students for Justice In Palestine" has been to press the administration to divest investments from Israeli companies, boycott vendors who do business with Israel, and to sanction professors who collaborate with academics in Israel. For the most part, BDS has been an economic failure, but their dramatic tactics are scary and paint Israel as all-evil. This has caused tremendous confusion among young Jewish students, who arrive at campus completely lacking in knowledge about "the real Israel," and are unable to counter the claims of anti-Israel students, and who thus become disillusioned and disenfranchised. The numbers speak volumes and they are frightening to whoever loves and cares about Israel-US relations into the next generation...click here to continue reading.

#Giving Tuesday - Thank You |
|
Thanks to the many alumni, parents of alumni, parents and friends of Schechter LI who gave back and gave forward, so generously, on #GivingTuesday.
This was, by far, our most successful #GivingTuesday, raising over $21,000, in addition to a most generous 1:1 match
. The openhandedness of this community makes it possible to bring exciting and meaningful Jewish and general curriculum to our children, support athletics and the arts & sciences, and provide tuition assistance to families in need. #GoSSLI!

Lower School Teachers as Learners |
|
|
For 5 days in November, under the leadership of Rav Yosi Cirlin, all of the lower school Judaic Studies teachers participated in daily communal prayer and reflection, Professional Development workshops and planning sessions, all for the purpose of making Tefillah meaningful and sacred for our students. Special guest instructors include Rabbi Rafi Rank of Midway Jewish Center, Rabbi Dov Lurea of SAR Academy, and Lisa Exler or Beit Rabban and Mechon Hadar. What a moving and transformational experience!
Mrs. Sheryl Sokoler, our lower school Educational Technology Integrator, studied Computer Science Fundamentals with
code.com. Schechter LI is at the forefront of introducing young children to computer coding, a skill seen as increasing necessary in many professions of the future. Todah Rabbah to Schechter Day, Dan Smith, who spoke to the students in grades K-5 about the importance of coding. Dan was very impressed how much our students already have learned.

Excerpts from Danielle Abada's (SSLI '10) Address at HS Open House 2016 |
|
All my friends from Schechter are following their dreams, and thriving at everything from medicine to government to finance to sports journalism. I felt prepared for college both academically and with the ability to balance different classes and commitments. A lot of other students felt frazzled by the many moving parts of college in a way that I don't think was as challenging for me, my brothers at Cornell, or my friends after four years of a dual curriculum at Schechter; where we balanced English and math but also Bible and Hebrew, student government and literary magazine, cross country or tennis... Back to School - by Professor Arnie Eisen |
|
Professor Arnie Eisen, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
Three weeks after the election, Jews, like other Americans, can think of little else than the changes in store for our country and the world. Fundamental Jewish values and concerns hang in the balance; indeed, the Jewish communal agenda seems to pale in importance compared to anxiety about the policies and pronouncements of the new administration now forming...
