Kona Coffee Cultural Festival Continues With Weekday Coffee Competitions, Throwdowns and a Theater Debut

Hawaii’s Iconic Food Festival continues through Sunday, Nov. 13, 2022

The 2022 Kona Coffee Cultural Festival continues to take center-stage with farm tours, barista training, coffee cupping competition, a coffee tasting workshop, art exhibits and much more.

Festival Weekday Events

There are lots of coffee-themed events this week.

Today starting at 7pm, the Aloha Theater hosts the Kona Coffee Gamble: 60 Years. The film takes a trip down memory land to look at a Kona family between 1924 and 1984 as recorded by Big Island Television.

Brewing the perfect cup is an exact science of identifying roast profiles and characteristics that require a lot of expertise. There are no shortcuts in each step taken to cultivate Kona’s coffee from farm to cup. The farmer, specific growing areas in Kona, weather, microclimates and varietals all influence the cup.

On Wednesday, the University of Hawaii at Manoa's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources will host a new Coffee Tasting Workshop Do You Know How to Brew that Perfect Cup of Coffee. The workshop is offering two sessions, one at 9 am and the second one at 1pm. Interested? Class sizes are limited to 10 people. And, coffees will be served black. Cost is $25. Coffee Throwdowns are fast-paced competitions where coffee baristas create and pour beautiful latte works of art in cups of steaming hot coffee. All eyes will be on the baristas as they show off their skills under the watchful eyes of judges and of course, coffee enthusiasts. Will it go to a sudden-death match? Will the defending champ take it all again? Check out the highly caffeinated Kona Coffee Signature Beverage Throwdown on Thursday, November 10 starting at 6 pm at Kona Coffee & Tea Company at Kona Coast Shopping Center.

To build confidence, Kona Coffee & Tea Company hosts a Kona Coffee Barista Training starting at 5pm on Monday, November 7 where seasoned coffee educators, trainers and professionals guide a robust coffee education experience in manual brewing techniques, espresso techniques, milk steaming, and latte art.

Cupping judges trained as Licensed Q Graders, have been busy this week evaluating Kona’s single estate farms and large farms that have entered the prestigious Kona Coffee Cupping Competition. Find out which Kona coffee farmer will walk away with the prestigious cupping win announced on Friday, November 11 at the Kona Coffee Village happening at Hale Halawai County Pavilion.
