LCHS Kids Learn Substance Abuse Dangers As they Celebrate Red Ribbon Week October 24-28
La Canada High School students are focusing this week on the dangers of drug and substance abuse through the school's annual Red Ribbon Week. Sponsored by the Student PTA (PTSA), the week includes a wide range of activities to generate awareness:
- Decorating the campus with Red Ribbons and banners;
- Receiving red bracelets and taking the pledge to remain drug-free;
- Viewing the remains of a wrecked car as a reminder to always drive without the influence of drugs or alcohol;
- Listening to inspirational speaker Daniel Puder, Ultimate Fighter and WWE wrestler and author of "My Life, My Power."
- Seeing Sherrif's Deputy Matejka simulate drunk driving wearing special goggles on an obstacle course
- Viewing a case filled with drug paraphernalia with discussion led by LCUSD Safety Officer, Tanya Wilson
Other activities designed to generate student interest and conversation with high-powered cars provided by the Sheriff's Department and an ASB assembly with music.
For heightening awareness, Dilbeck Real Estate Living provides the students with a red wristband to wear during the week as a reminder of their pledge to remain drug-free. Extensive support is also received from the La Crescenta Sherrif's Department.
Red Ribbon Week originated in 1985 to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a drug-free America. Beginning October 24thand extending through Friday, October 28th, LAUSD students will learn skills for resisting substance abuse.
