Greetings!
Last week I talked a bit about Hungarians and the coal mines. As I mentioned, I am trying to learn a bit more about my great uncle who died in the coal mines in Kentucky in 1933. It was awesome to hear from others who also have a coal mining in their family's history. I love all the threads of connection between us. It's fascinating! I think that as we each learn about our own history it helps us understand our families and ourselves better. When I see the things my ancestors went through, it gives me renewed appreciation for my own upbringing!

Let's Cook Hungarian Challenge
If am super excited about this month's challenge. Have you ever made or eaten Kossuth Kifli before? I have eaten them before but had not made them until this week. It's a quick and fairly simple recipe and perfect for the challenge! They are light and spongy with just a hint of sweetness! A recipe is at the link below, but feel free to use your family recipe or one from a cookbook you own!
Lajos Kossuth (or Kossuth Lajos, in Hungarian form) is one of those names in Hungarian history you ought to know. He visited quite a few cities in the USA -- Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, and many more during a fundraising visit in 1851-1852. There are still some counties in various states that bear his name. My grandfather, Rev. Andor M. Leffler, wrote his doctoral thesis titled, The Kossuth Episode in America. Isn't that an intriguing title??? So I have the opportunity to do a little extra digging, right on my shelf! Kossuth was a journalist, politician, statesman, lawyer, and Governor-President of the Kingdom of Hungary during the revolution of 1848–49. If you make this month's challenge, add to your knowledge by learning a bit more about Kossuth!

Seven Tribesmen Brewery
In June we had plans to get to New Jersey and New York for all sorts of projects we are working on. We hoped to meet up with a distant cousin we recently found (so exciting!!!) and also work on some fun upcoming collaborations. And, Seven Tribesmen Brewery has been on our list since the day they opened! But, our extended family situations became more serious and so we have tabled our "in person" presence for the moment. But, we will be in for a visit to this brewery as soon as we can!
I am not a huge beer drinker but Don, my husband, does like to piddle around with brewing and tasting beer. And what I love about the Seven Tribesmen is the shared heritage of the owners. I love that they have incorporated a bit of their Hungarian heritage in this beer brewing adventure! Here is what they say at their website: The founders of Seven Tribesmen Brewery are Hungarian-American childhood friends. The name Seven Tribesmen is a reference to their cultural heritage and represents their goal of building a local, New Jersey craft beer tribe.
If you live nearby or travel in the area, I encourage you to check them out! We hope to get there soon!

Getting Started with Genealogy
Whether or not you are into genealogy, there are some things you should write down for other generations. If you don’t have kids or siblings, it is still important. Why? Because you probably have first, second, or third cousins or other family members who may need or want the information, they just don’t know it yet. And, let me tell you, no one knows your own family details like you do! But, even if there is no one else in your family to share the information with, your story is important!
So grab a notebook and let's get started! We already have 5 of the icipici editions on Getting Started with Genealogy available!
