.
Greetings!
Hello Braiders,

Gr e etings! October already.  We had out first snow of the year yesterday. It's white outside and cold. The winds came, the pine needles dumped from the trees and the snow fell. My front yard looks like a battle ground with turned over adirondack chairs and a bent over wind sculpture!

I have 3 new Kits this Month. I got started and just couldn't stop. I have even more kits this go around so everybody should get what they want. I have a ton of fun new stuff in the pipelines, so remember to check Facebook and Instagram and when you see your What a Braid newsletter in your inbox, don't hesitate!

Again, thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. I know there are lots of opportunities for Kumihimo shopping. And I welcome all of you that are new customers and I appreciate my many faithfuls that keep on returning. Some of you have been customers for over 6 years! Thanks so much.

Happy Braiding,

October Kit of the Month
"Mossy Green"
Okay, I have said it before, this is another fun one and easy too. This necklace kit comes in three colorways - all are beautiful and they are wonderful for the Fall season.  The combination of the Ribbon and Satin creates a braid with interest and texture that compliments the focal pieces exquisitely! The necklace can be as long as 22" to 23" or as short as you like. I haven't decided if I want to wear mine longer or shorter. So many choices!
Kit includes:
- Gala Ribbon
- Petite Satin Cord
- 6.25mm Acrylic Magnetic End Cap
- Assembled Focal Pendant
- Spiral Pendant Holder
- Instructions with Photos
You will need:
- Kumihimo Disk (I use the  Beadsmith Mini and it's great)
- Bobbins (I use the  Small EZ Bobbins)
- Scissors
- Tape Measure
- Fray Block (or Fray Check) one tubes lasts a long time; available at www.whatabraid.com
- Glue (I use WeldBond Universal Glue available at Ace Hardware stores & some craft stores)

- This is an "intermediate skill experience" kit (you will learn a new braid structure)

Gala Ribbon
Gala Ribbon is a fabulous, soft 100% Nylon ribbon that measures 1/4" wide when completely flattened. It's width makes it perfect for braiding on a Kumihimo Disk and it braids nicely on the Marudai as well. Like many of the other "novelty" braiding fibers, Gala is super used as an accent with Kumihimo Rayon Gimp, Petite Satin Cord and Tubular Shimmer Yarn. The variegated and solids colors are both gorgeous and Gala feels so good in your hands. Enjoy. Click here for Gala Ribbon.

Reno Fiber Guild Outreach & Wisdom from an 8-Year Old
Karen (left) demonstrating Kumihimo
I had the opportunity to be a part of the  Reno Fiber Guild Community Outreach Day. The Reno Fiber Guild is a wonderful group of very talented  fiber  lovers and artists. You name it, they do it (or weave it, or braid it)! A couple  of Saturdays  ago, they held a community outreach program to introduce and expose members of the community, young and old alike, to the many ways we work with fiber. There were many demo looms including a mountain loom, backstrap loom, rigid heddle loom, 8 shaft table loom and an inkle loom. This year they added Kumihimo Braiding to the "hands on" activities.  The public was introduced to this wonderful technique through both foam discs and also the  Marudai.  Along with the actual experience of making braids, there were many examples of completed jewelry pieces and braids to examine.

Kumihimo Braid Samples
I had
the absolute pleasure of demonstrating Kumihimo, both on the Marudai and foam disks, to many interested people. It didn't matter what age, everyone enjoyed the feel of picking up a disk or trying their hands at the Marudai. My favorite was working with a young girl all of 8 years old. She showed up with a painted face and eagerness to learn. She plopped into her chair and after a few minutes she was braiding an 8 strand Kongoh and a few minutes after that she had mastered a 16 strand braid. I whispered in her ear that she was my fastest learner of the day and she replied back "my mom told me to learn as much as you can when you're young because it is harder to learn when you get older". Wonderful wisdom from an 8-year old. Fantastic day!

Suffice to say, September kept me on my toes. "When it rains, it pours" came to mind more than once.

Lemons: Early in the month my husband and I went on a weekend mountain biking trip. It was the usual good time. But when we got back, Robbie's leg started hurting and before we knew it we were in the ER room (all night) with surgery in the morning followed by a long week in the hospital. He is home now, feeling well, only slowed down by IV antibiotics for several weeks.
Lemonade: The good news...his IV stand, which I am sure we paid an arm and a leg for, will have a secondary use - I am thinking that it will make a great, lightweight, portable "core stand" for braiding. I can hardly wait to try it out.

So, when life give you lemons, make lemonade.

P.S. Did I mention that I am glad it's October?
