Happy New Year!

Hello Hello,

Happy, Happy New Year. I wish all of you health, happiness and good fortune in the new year.

2014 was a wonderful year for What a Knit and Kumihimo too and I couldn't have done it without you. Thank you so much for your continued support and loyalty. The special connections I have made with many of you is the best thing about what I do. Many, many heartfelt thanks. Here's to another year of creativity and fun and completing projects.

Great news! The ship arrived and I got a big delivery of Kumihimo Rayon Ribbon and Gimp. I also added a new braiding fiber, Kumihimo Rayon Sparkle " KRS".

Listening to your requests, the January Kit of the Month is the Blended Beaded Necklace using size 8/0 seed beads. The "Original" Blended Beaded Necklace,  from 2011, was made with 6/0 seed beads. The new necklace produces a more refined and smaller diameter rope. I like both "versions". The "Original" comes with the magnetic end cap closure and the "New" kit features the adjustable closure.

Last but not least, I will be at the Bead Show in Tucson for the first week in February. Really excited to look for new stuff to share with all of you. You can place orders while I am away, but I will not be shipping orders the first week of February

Happy Braiding and Happy New Year,

New Colors! Kumihimo Rayon Gimp & Ribbon
I was absolutely delighted when the delivery man knocked on my door with my package from overseas. The only thing that offsets waiting for international packages is opening them.  The packages literally explode with amazing color and texture. The colors are rich and beautiful. I take everything out and pile my treasures on my work table and it is quite a sight.

If you haven't treated yourself to the Kumihimo Rayon Ribbon and Gimp, you should give it a try. It is gorgeous.

Brand New! Kumihimo Rayon Sparkle "KRS"

I love trying new fibers. Kumihimo Rayon Sparkle is a knitted tubular rayon ribbon yarn similar to rayon ribbon, but it has a Silver Lurex thread knitted in with the rayon. The inclusion of this Lurex gives sparkle to the space-dyed 5mm ribbon. The "KRS" is an excellent fiber to use as an accent with another fiber (like Gimp, Ribbon or Satin). It can be braided on the Disk, Plate or Marudai. You can also embellish with 6/0 seed beads. By applying some Fray Check to the end of the cord, letting it dry and cutting the end to a point, I was
able to thread 6/0 seed beads on the KRS.

January Kit of the Month - 8/0 Blended Beaded Necklace Kit
This is a classic. This is a re-do of the "Original" 6/0 Blended Beaded Necklace Kit. For this new kit, I have changed to 8/0 seed beads (smaller than 6/0) and added the "adjustable" closure. The "blended" design consists of five sections of patterns. The beaded portion measures about 17" with 6" of braided tails on either end. The necklace slips over your head and you can adjust the length of the necklace depending on what you are wearing. I like this flexibility.

Beaded Pip Cluster Necklace - 3 New Colors!
The Pip Cluster Bead Necklace Kit was a real hit last month so I have added more colors this month. They are all beautiful.   This mixture of techniques, from some of my past kits, combines braiding with beads and the Cluster Bead Necklace (2011).
This adjustable length necklace is made with 8/0 seed beads and 5 "clusters" of Pip beads. The beaded portion measures
right around 16" with 6" of braided tails on either end. The necklace slips over your head and you can adjust the length of the necklace depending on what you are wearing. I like this flexibility.

Kumihimo Artist of the Month
Carolyn Kerr - Miami, Florida

Carolyn Kerr is another braider that I had the fun fortune to meet on the Japan Adventure Tour.

Carolyn's style is unique and tends to be asymmetrical and more abstract. She combines all kinds of different fibers and beads into her masterpieces. Her unique approach is super.

In Carolyn's words.....
"Art has always been an important part of my life.  I have expressed myself using many different media.  I was introduced to Kumihimo four years ago using the foam disk and plate. Today, most of my pieces are made on the Marudai.  I combine silk, yarns, precious stones, silver and Japanese glass beads to
Refined Sophistication
An interesting blend of techniques!
create a unique piece that balances refined sophistication with unexpected, playful details".

In Japan, Carolyn really took to braiding on the square plate creating flowers inspired by Makiko Tada. The flower pictured is made with Japanese Metallic Threads and a Pearl accent. Exquisite!

For those interested in trying some new things with your Kumihimo (like the flower), I suggest Makiko Tada's two books written for the disk and plate:
Comprehensive Treatise of Braids VI: Kumihimo Disk and Plate     $42

Comprehensive Treatise of Braids VII: Kumihimo Disk & Plate 2    $42

I just received my latest shipment of books from Japan and both books are in stock and ready to ship. I can't express enough how wonderful these books are. Mine are worn out from flipping through the pages. And what's wonderful, the more you learn about Kumihimo and braiding, the more you can get out of the books. There are layers and layers of knowledge waiting for you.

Kumihimo Tip of the Month #29
"Starting in the Middle"  This is a fabulous technique to have in your Kumihimo "tool box". When you want to use a focal bead, whether you are making a beaded necklace or a cord only necklace, sometimes the hole in the focal bead is too small to pass the finished braid. With this technique, you actually start with your focal bead in the middle and braid from the middle and work your way out to each end. You'll be braiding half the necklace at a time!  As long as the unbraided cords will pass through the middle of your focal bead, you can use this technique.  This technique works for single focal beads as well as multiple focal beads. In the photo above, I threaded 8 strands of C-lon Bead Cord through my focal bead. Then I situated the focal bead in the middle of the 8 cords and tied a knot on one side of the focal bead so it would not slide off. I dropped the tails, the knot and the focal bead (in that order) through the center of the disk. Next I placed the cords in the appropriate slots on the disk, loaded my beads and braided. When I was done with the 1st half , I simply took everything off the disk, untied the knot near the focal bead and then put the completed half of the braid through the center of the disk. Repeat just like the first half of the braid...load beads, braid and you've done it!
Free Tutorial - Square Braid
Want to try your hands at something new?
Try a Square Braid. Here it is in 10 simple steps on the foam disk. (It would be 4 steps on a Marudai)! When I am practicing a new braid, I cut the number of lengths I need by 1 yard each and braid up a sample. For the braid in the diagram below, choose two colors. Cut 6 of Color A and 2 of Color B. Place on disk in positions shown in step one. (Pairs of cords straddle the N (32,1), S (16,17), E (8,9), W (24,25)  "dots"). These numbers correspond to the numbers on the Hamanaka, BeadSmith 6" and BeadSmith Mini Disks and most others! Braid each of the steps as shown. You will not rotate the disk! The numbers are only there to help in the beginning. I urge you to try to recognize and internalize the braiding sequence in your mind so you don't need to use the pattern. Sounds hard at first, but it is really very easy and it is a great goal. Later, you can experiment with more colors and you can place the colors anywhere you like. When you come up with a combination you like, make sure you take NOTES. Notes are great to refer back to when you might want to duplicate a braid again! Kumihimo Tip #5 (2011)  Have fun!
Curious? Give it a try and send your pictures to me at  [email protected]. Enjoy!
