The Chinese New Year season always brings a renewed sense of hope and anticipation for good things to come. A part of this anticipation entails practicing local customs that we believe bring in good luck for the new year ahead. Here are some of the traditions that we do as we usher in each Lunar New Year.
New clothes for the New Year
More than just an excuse to go shopping, wearing new clothes symbolizes a fresh beginning as we greet the new year. The color red is typically worn, as it is believed to be an auspicious color which will bring prosperity throughout the year.
Spring cleaning
The principle of having a fresh start is also applied to our homes, so we can welcome the turn of the new year in a clean and harmonious environment. It is also believed that cleaning our homes is a way of removing any bad luck or negative energy that may have been left behind from the previous year, making space for good fortune in our home.
Making a wish at the Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree
Hopes and dreams for the new year are manifested on to the Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree, where locals typically write their wishes on a placard, tie it to a mandarin, and throw it onto the tree. This age-old tradition has turned into the annual Lam Tsuen Well Wishing Festival, which allows everyone to throw in their wishes during the first two weeks of the new year.
