Kyrgyzstan, officially the Kyrgyz Republic, is a mountainous landlocked country in Central Asia. Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the south, and China to the east. Its capital and largest city is Bishkek. Ethnic Kyrgyz make up the majority of the country’s six million people, followed by significant minorities of Uzbeks and Russians. The Kyrgyz language is closely related to other Turkic languages.
Kyrgyzstan attained sovereignty as a nation state after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, and after a number of transitional governments, it reverted to a presidential system in 2021. The country’s transition economy is heavily dependent on deposits of gold, coal and uranium.
Beschbarmak is the national dish of Kyrgyzstan, although it is also popular in neighboring countries. It consists of horse meat (mutton or beef) cooked in a broth for several hours and served over rice or homemade noodles with parsley. We were served a delicious homemade beschbarmak that came from the Embassy kitchen in Washington D.C.
On behalf of PATA New York Chapter, NY PATA Chairman, Joebert Opulencia and Immediate Past Chair (2016-2022), Elizabeth Chin wishes to thank the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic and Catherine Heald of Remote Lands for a remarkable event and warm hospitality.
