The Jewish holidays, particularly Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, carry themes that resonate deeply with the concept of living a long, meaningful live. These themes are especially relevant in the context of Jewish Senior Life.
The High Holy Days emphasize reflection on the past year and the renewal of life in the year ahead. For older adults this period offers a time to reflect on our personal journeys, cherish our accomplishments, and renew our sense of purpose. It reinforces the idea that no matter one's age, life is continually renewing, and that personal growth is always possible.
| INTERNATIONAL FIDDLER ON THE ROOF VOICES | The music accompanying the Sabbath prayer is especially meaningful to us as we reach this season. Thank you to Meer resident Nancy Kalef, for sharing it for our newsletter. |
It’s sunny. There’s a little bit of a chill in the air. My thoughts have turned to apples, eating them, picking them, the memories I have around doing both, cider, donuts, corn mazes, and hats, of course. I grew up at Shaarey Zedek, and as a kid my mind was prone to wandering off the liturgy and onto the ladies’ hats. I don’t have anything to compare it to, but man were there some great hats at Shaarey Zedek back in the day. And great sermons – Rabbi Groner knocked it out of the park every year. Even as a kid, I listened and learned. These days, my listening and learning happens daily at Jewish Senior Life. As we get older, we keep listening and learning, and, as a result, I am surrounded by people who know more and have seen more than I have. That includes our residents and our volunteers. Our volunteers are listening and learning also, and they care and, as a result, they not only contribute their valuable time, but often share valuable insights and suggestions. As I think back over this past year, it is with such gratitude for all the folks who are part of the JSL community. And I want to wish a very happy and healthy new year to everyone who is part of this very special family. Shana tova v metukah!
In this coming year, soon, in fact, we will get to celebrate JSL with our annual FRIENDS fund/friendraiser. On Sunday, November 17 at 2:pm, we will gather at Adat Shalom Synagogue for an afternoon of comedy, so break out your plastic noses and mustaches and your whoopee cushions and join us for Lives Well Lived: Still Laughing After All These Years. And we will be, because we are welcoming the very, very funny Al Lubel to do the shtick he’s brought to Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Jay Leno and many other stages. Invitations are in the mail, but it’s also easy to get your tickets online at https://jslmi.org/events/jsls-lives-well-lived/ (if you tried before and had any trouble, it’s working perfectly now). Or, feel free to call me at 248 592-5062.
If you’re looking for ways to make this coming year more meaningful, I’d invite you to spend some of it here at JSL. We are looking for volunteers for activities, visits, programs, the boutiques, and the bistro, café and pantry. Please check out https://jslmi.org/volunteer/ for a list of opportunities or feel free to give me a call. I’d love to hear from you and I’d love to help you find the perfect way to be part of the JSL community.
And now, one final flashback to last year. Last Friday, we had our fall fashion show at Fleischman, featuring models from Fleischman and Hechtman, and fashions from Sharon’s boutique. A big thank you to our models Rise Bienstock-Stein, Hettie Davis, Marilyn Dizik, Maureen Entin, Laurie Green, Ruthe Levy, Millie Mintz, Roz Rogers, Marilyn Weiss, and Danny Wohl. And another big thank you to our volunteers Ruby Fridson, Sandy Kirsch, Debbie Lebovic, and Mary Schwartz.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
