SUKKOT
This evening at sundown, the holiday of Sukkot begins. Sukkot is one of the most joyful holidays on the Jewish calendar. It is one of three Pilgrimage festivals or major holidays mentioned in the Torah, on which Jews would travel to the ancient temple in Jerusalem. The other two festivals are Pesach (Passover) and Shavuot (Feast of Weeks). Sukkot was originally an agricultural holiday, the thanksgiving for the fruit harvest.
Sukkot in Hebrew means booth or hut and refers to the dwellings created in the fields where Jews would reside and sleep while gathering their harvest, while away from their homes. Today, people create these temporary dwellings in honor of this wonderful holiday. The lulav, its backbone from the palm tree, and the etrog, a lemon-like fragrant fruit, are symbols used in this holiday. Happy Sukkot!

Manny Drukier narrowly escaped the war by jumping from a "death train" at age 16, finding refuge at a home for orphans and displaced children. Seventy-one years later, Manny, who lived in Toronto, was tracked down by a German researcher who had been searching for the surviving children for the past decade. She invited Manny to return to the former orphanage to share his story with the next generation of school students. Manny must now revisit the places of his darkest memories, to reconcile the past and educate the future. A Q & A will follow after each screening.
