OCTOBER 2024
Elul 5784 -Tishrei 5785
| |
“Shalom, Welcome to Temple Israel....” is a phrase taught to us by Carole Lachman, a beloved, long-time congregant and bulletin editor who died in 2002. We named our bulletin in her honor and worked to realize her vision of Temple Israel as a community that welcomes the stranger and lets no one stand alone. This new version of the bulletin maintains our tradition of communicating with our Temple Israel family and continues to forward Carole’s vision, love and devotion for our synagogue.

A Message from
Rabbi Michael D. Howald
| |
An adage in the Jewish community proclaims that the High Holidays always come too early or too late and, even when they come somewhere in the middle, we are not prepared. This maxim inspired the title of one of my favorite books: This is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared: The Days of Awe as a Journey of Transformation, written by Rabbi Alan Lew. This year, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur come during a time when a good deal of our attention is focused on what’s happening elsewhere; on Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza and the almost daily rocket attacks by Hezbollah, or on the upcoming consequential presidential election, or on just keeping all the plates of our daily lives spinning for one more day.
No matter in what year the High Holidays come, so many other things compete for our awareness that it is easy to enter this ancient period of reflection and repair without any preparation at all. For that reason, Jewish tradition encourages us to listen to the sound of the shofar every morning during the month of Elul, the Jewish month that precedes Rosh Hashana. The shofar serves this function because the ancient rabbis believed that the ram’s horn has the magical ability to wake us up to hear the insistent call to change and improve ourselves during the Days of Awe. The shofar has this ability because, according to myth, the making of the first shofars preceded the Days of Creation and those shofars will last until the end of the world. As related in this story, the ram that Abraham sacrificed instead of Isaac on Mount Moriah was created before the world existed and it supplied the very horn that Moses blew at Mount Sinai as well as the horn that Elijah will blow at the End of Days. (“And on that day, a great ram’s horn will be sounded” Isaiah 27:13).
The sound of the shofar encourages us to both wake up and focus our attention. Like the trumpets that called the Israelites to move forward in the desert, as musician Joey Weisenberg points out in his book The Torah of Music, the shofar heralds, it announces, it summons, it communicates with God and its resonance is a “primeval sound carrying messages from out of time.” For that reason, the shofar’s blasts pierce our consciousness and our complacency by reminding us we are about to enter holy time.
Even more important, the Mishnah, the first ancient compendium of Jewish law, teaches that the sound of the shofar can be like the sound of human sobbing. The Zohar adds that there is a palace of tears, particularly on Yom Kippur, to which we may only gain admittance through crying. This is the crying of personal regret for our many failures, the sobbing of grief for the loved ones we have lost and the weeping of mortal creatures who recognize their own finitude. The sound of the shofar encompasses them all.
The shofar can also express joy. We all look forward to hearing the shofar at the end of the last service of Yom Kippur. That sound heralds the end of our fasting but it also, if we have put in the work, recognizes that the person we were when the month of Elul began, has begun to transform into a different and better version of ourselves. If we are fully awake when the Days of Awe begin, the weight of all the prayers and confessions, the crescendo of the special music and the insistent sound of the shofar remind us that we all have the capacity to change. We only need the will to do so.
So, as the year 5785 in the Jewish calendar is about to begin, let us listen to the ancient call of the shofar. May it awaken us from our slumber and our inattention and summon us to repair ourselves and our broken world. L’shana tovah tikateivu-v’teichateimu! May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year!

A Message from the Co-Presidents
We are in the midst of the most exciting time of year at the synagogue. It is the High Holy Days. Each of us has a way that we are Jewish, we relate to the religion in our own way. Some of you attend services regularly, others attend only on the High Holy Days. Some have mastered the Hebrew language; they can read and write fluently. Others just listen, repeat words that sound familiar, but have little knowledge of the language. Every practice and every person’s traditions are CORRECT!
Rosh Hashanah is a solemn time, a time to confront the deeds of the past year and reconcile with oneself and with anyone whom we have hurt or wronged. Rosh Hashanah commemorates the birth of the world; it is a time of renewal.
The 10 days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the “Days of Awe” when we cleanse our souls, spiritually and physically. We probe our inner feelings and our religious feelings.
This culminates with the final service of Yom Kippur, the Neilah, the closing of the gates. We hear the blowing of the Shofar, and the final sealing of the heavenly gates. We should have received forgiveness; the gates are closed until Rosh Hashanah next year.
And so, the cycle continues, year after year. The familiarity that we have with the traditions, the music, the words is so reassuring. We “come home” every year, joining our fellow congregants in celebrating the High Holy Days. Our rituals are our connections to God and one another.
We hope that this year is a fulfilling one for each of you. If you have not fully participated in life at Temple Israel this can be your year to become involved. We are a volunteer organization, and we need your help and input. Feel free to call the Temple office at 1(718)727-2231 and leave a message. We will reach out to you.
L’ Shanah Tovah- may you be inscribed in the Book of Life.
Sincerely,
Bryn Biren & Russell Kaminsky

It’s hard to believe that the High Holidays are already here. It’s amazing how quickly the year goes.
Sisterhood looks forward to celebrating with you and to continuing our wonderful traditions of providing cake and challah after Rosh Hashanah services and some refreshments to break the fast following the Neilah Service on Yom Kippur. We are grateful to Libby Gershansky and Pamela Rogozin for coordinating these two initiatives and for all the Sisterhood members who have volunteered to assist. Please feel free to offer your assistance on Rosh Hashanah Morning or Yom Kippur afternoon as we set up for these events in the kitchen.
We are grateful to Linda Brill, Barbara Feigelman, Sue Freedman, Karen Gross, Silvia Gornstein, Blanche Ricci and Nina Rohan who made sure that all of the ritual silver in our synagogue is polished to a high shine and sparkling in time for the holidays and to Blanche Ricci and her team for making sure we had beautiful honey gifts to share with a our family and friends.
Thank you to Anita Zuckerberg for hosting our last Executive Board meeting on Tuesday, August 3rd. It was a very productive meeting. Plan were made for our latest Social Justice Project— “THIS ONE’S FOR THE GIRLS”-- and we are happy to see that the bin we have set up in the lobby is filling up with the requested feminine hygiene products. Please bring your donations with you to our upcoming meeting this Sunday, September 29th. And make sure to help us out by joining us to write postcards to encourage Florida voters to vote “yes” on Issue 4 to limit government interference with abortion access.
You should be receiving Sisterhood’s Annual Community New Year’s Card very soon. Thank you to all who participated in this wonderful tradition. We are especially grateful to Silvia Gornstein and Judy Lee for organizing this, to Jules Lee for the beautiful original artwork and to all those who helped.
Sisterhood of Temple Israel is proud to have had the largest representative group at the recent WRJ Northeast-Atlantic District gathering at the Museum of Broadway on 9/22. We enjoyed an informative and enjoyable talk about Jews of Broadway by Dr. Barrie Gelles and then had the opportunity to experience the entire museum. It was a wonderful day filled with learning, theatre, music and fun.
We are looking forward to re-vitalizing our tradition of a Bring-A-Dairy-Dish-to-Share Dinner prior to the Erev Sukkot Service on Wednesday, October 16th. For those of you who have never experienced this, all we ask is that each family attending bring a pre-cooked or prepared dairy dish that would be enough for 8-10 people (That’s about a half-tray size.). Sisterhood provides all the plates, serving pieces, silverware, and beverages. You come, drop your tray off in the kitchen and then enjoy. (A little help with clean-up is always appreciated!). We hope you will join us. Please contact Shariann at fekete804@aol.com to let her know what you plan to bring…. just so we don’t wind up with 15 baked zitis or 20 salads!
A few days later, we look forward to having you and your family with us as we celebrate in the Sukkah with Pizza in the Hut/Sippin’ in the Sukkah. Reservations for the pizza portion of the evening are requested. Please see the details on the flyer below.
Whenever October rolls around, Sisterhood always spends a little extra time remembering those of our beloved members who we have lost to breast cancer over the years. In their memory, we make sure to collect donations to the American Cancer Society for the fight against Breast Cancer. We honor them by taking part in the Staten Island Breast Cancer Walk each year. We hope you will join us on Sunday, October 27th at 8:30 a.m. at Midland Beach. Wear your brightest pinks and help us support this worthy cause.
Please save November 9th for a fabulous night of Bingo. This is a joint venture between Sisterhood and Brotherhood. There will be cash prizes, raffles and lots and lots of fun.
Most importantly, we hope that you will renew or begin your Sisterhood Membership for the coming year. Your support, with your presence and your dues, helps us to maintain our temple traditions and continue to support Temple Israel with activities, ice machines, tablecloths, onegs, etc. For information about membership, please contact our Membership Vice-Presidents Karen Gross and Sandy Feuerstein at karenjg33@gmail.com or bartenda23@aol.com.
We hope to see you on September 29th at all our Sisterhood events.

Dear Religious School Families,
A brand new year of Religious School has begun! We are so excited for all of the wonderful programs and activities we have lined up for our students this year. This year, we have Brianna Levinsky as our Kitah Alef teacher, supported by assistant teacher, Ma'ayan Feldman. Emily Levkovich is our Kitah Bet teacher. Genevieve Lopez is her assistant teacher. Kitah Gimmel will be taught by Rabbi Howald, along with Gabriella Rubin. Brooke Lopez will be pushing in every week to add a music and theatre component to the lesson, and prepare students for the 4 assembly presentations we will have throughout the year. More information on assembly dates will be distributed in the coming weeks.
Tzedakah will be collected every Sunday. We encourage you to send a charitable donation of $1 - $5 in with your child each week. Classes will vote on the organizations receiving the money every month.
Pretzel sales are back! Thanks to Jen Rachman, Religious School students can enjoy a pretzel after class for $3. Please send your child in with cash if they would like to purchase a snack. All proceeds from this fundraiser go toward Religious School events.
In addition to Religious School on Sundays, our Kitah Gimmel students will meet with the Rabbi every Thursday from 4:30 - 5:30pm for Hebrew class. It was clear to us after hearing last year's student reflections at the Stepping Up Ceremony, that the children shared a desire for increased Hebrew instruction. Bringing back Hebrew class during the week was the logical next step.
We are encouraging all of our Religious School families to play a more active role this year in planning and organizing events for our students. Our Parent Committee meets once a month, from 10 - 10:30 on Sunday morning, during Religious School. Please join us, share your ideas, learn about upcoming opportunities, and get to know the other class parents!
If you have any questions or concerns about the Religious School, please contact Brooke Lopez regarding curriculum, and Felicia Otto regarding administrative issues. Hard copies of our updated Religious School Handbook are available in the temple lobby, and digital versions can be sent to you by emailing Brooke at msbiren78@aol.com
Thank you!

The mission of the Dr. Ronald Avis Foundation for Temple Israel Reform Congregation is:
…. to provide financial support for young families seeking membership in Temple Israel, and to attract new young families by providing learning opportunities, family programming, and social justice initiatives.
***********************************************************
Welcome to October
We are all looking forward to our Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah services. On Rosh HaShana, October 3rd, your children will be able to be in the downstairs classrooms for wonderful activities and they will be brought upstairs to be with you for the blowing of the shofar! And we hope your children enjoy the Yom Kippur Children’s service at 1:30 on October 12th.
Also, join us on the erev Sukkot on October 16th and bring a “Share-A-Dairy-Dish-Dinner” . It will be wonderful for you to all participate in the long-standing temple tradition at our Sukkot service. Everyone is going to participate that way! And all our young children are also going to love coming to Erev Simchat Torah on Wednesday evening, October 23rd. There will be wonderful ice cream for our children at the one that evening!
We are continuing to arrange for many wonderful things this coming year, including going to the Children’s Jewish Museum in Brooklyn, learning how to make Challah, the wonderful Cutest Cookie store where our children can create Chanukah cookies, and other good events for our children. If you have other thoughts of a meaningful experience for the children, let us know and we will see what we can create. We will reach out to you all as soon as we have dates for these events.
Please, continue to reach out to either of us to discuss any volunteering you are interested in doing.
Sincerely,
Bryn Biren and Terry Baver

The story of the Dr. Ronald Avis Foundation for Temple Israel
Dr. Avis originally provided our wonderful Foundation to cover a portion of the membership cost for the first 6 years for young families with young children. Our congregation had been diminishing and he was looking for a way to help us all begin to grow. After meeting with Bryn and Terry a few times, more money was added so the families would also have the opportunities to experience programs for their children. Many wonderful events have been set up for the young families including museum visits, Chanukah cookie designs, a Challah class, a program at the Staten Island Holocaust Center, and many other experiences. The foundation has also helped cover the cost of the religious school teachers.
But then!!!! Covid happened!!!!!!
So the decision was made to use a portion of the foundation money to help all the temple members. The Avis Foundation began to create the zoom classes for the adults in our congregation. These classes are continuing and the foundation covers the costs of them all. The Avis Foundation also covered the cost of the 75th anniversary event. And the foundation is now working with Judy Pessah and the Adult Education Committee to help cover the cost of all the events and classes for the adults in the congregation.
So: Our entire congregation has benefitted from the generosity of the Foundation. Thank you RON!!!!
