Los Angeles, October 1, 2020 – LA Animal Services has added a new interactive tool to help families with pets in the City of Los Angeles. By partnering with Home To Home™, LA Animal Services will give pet owners who can no longer keep their pets the opportunity to find new, loving homes without having to surrender them to the shelter by posting their pet on LAanimalservices.home-home.org. Through Home To Home™ pets can go from their current home right into another, which means less stress for animals and humans alike. The platform also offers potential new owners the opportunity to communicate directly with the current owners, providing firsthand information about the companion animal.
Home To Home™ is a rehoming website for owners who need to surrender or find a new home for their pets, which can include dogs, cats and other animals. Those needing to rehome pets fill out a brief form, upload a picture, and hit submit. For those seeking to adopt, there is also a pet search feature. Home To Home™ is free to use; however, there are some rules to the site, such as no money is allowed to exchange hands. Re-homing fees don’t lead to better outcomes for pets, but quality communications will.
To ensure that pets are featured accurately as well as in alignment with the Home To Home guidelines, staff from LA Animal Service will monitor the site as well as work with participants, as necessary, to help or to offer advice. Home To Home™ pet postings will be promoted on the L.A. Animal Services Home To Home™ Facebook page to help generate interest. Not only will this tool make transitions into new homes easier for pets, but it will also leave more shelter resources available to lost, abandoned, sick or injured animals, who come into our Centers with no other options for care. While re-homing pets through Home To Home™ will alleviate the need for some pets to be surrendered to the shelter, it won't be suitable for all re-homing needs. As always, sick or injured animals may be surrendered directly to any one of our LA Animal Services Center.
According to Brenda Barnette, General Manager for LA Animal Services, "We see the immense stress people are under when they need to surrender their pets to us and with the continuing pandemic, we anticipate a steady increase in owner surrenders, as more people are faced with an unavoidable change in living situations. We encourage pet owners to use the Home To Home tool within the time frame of finding out when relocation of their pet is necessary and their actual moving date.”
Our participation in Home To Home™ is due to the generous support from a Maddie’s Fund Grant, #ThankstoMaddie. Our share of the Maddie’s Fund Grant covers the cost of our own Home To Home™ branded website, LAanimalservices.home-home.org, and a year of web hosting.
