Greetings Animal-Loving Angelenos!
I am proud to announce the launch of our LA Animal Services Monthly Newsletter in which we will feature the latest news and policies affecting our animal companions, helpful topics and tips to promote the health and well-being of your pets, and available programs and upcoming events offered by our Department. With our new publication, we also aim to generate awareness of the resources available to the residents of Los Angeles and the services we provide to the orphaned and lost pets who have found their way into our care; and through our monthly
Happy Adoption Tail
spotlights, showcase our fantastic shelter pets through the experiences of our adopters.
The state of California is second only to the state of Texas in the number of pets dying in shelters, however in the City of Los Angeles, we
take life-saving seriously. During the past three years, the live-save rate for dogs in Los Angeles has increased from 91.78% to 93.67%. We have not declared Los Angeles a no-kill city because we are not yet there for kitties. While there is still plenty of work for us to do, our 2019
Year in Review
shares the milestones we have achieved, including 21,101 adoptions to the public, 39,283 spay and neuter surgeries provided to the animal companions of LA City residents, and 118,000+ hours put in by our 3,001 volunteers, who are as committed as we are in providing care and support for our furry friends.
As a way to give more people the opportunity to meet and interact with our amazing animals, we introduced our short-term foster program called
Furry Field Trip
in November 2019.
Furry Field Trip
enables animal-loving residents who are currently unable to adopt a pet with the opportunity to spend some time with one of our adoptable dogs and cats through short-term fostering, whereby offering our four-legged friends a change in scenery and an invigorating outing away from kennel life. Since launching, eight cats and 128 dogs have enjoyed
Furry Field Trip
excursions, resulting in the adoptions of five cats and 47 dogs.
With six LA Animal Services Centers located throughout Los Angeles, we are continually looking for new ways to engage and connect with the community we serve. #1. Spay & Neuter Your Pets
With the Spring and Summer months approaching, pet owners are encouraged to have their pets spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted pet births.
In Los Angeles, the law requires that all dogs and cats in the City be spayed or neutered after the age of four months, with some
exemptions
allowed. There are many benefits to spaying and neutering your pet, which include helping to prevent unwanted litters, discouraging unwanted behaviors like biting and fighting, and lowering the risk of certain cancers in dogs and cats.

#2. Kitten Season is Almost Here!
Become a kitten foster and save lives! LA Animal Services receives thousands of young kittens every year. The shelters' ability to save many of these orphaned animals is directly dependent on the number of foster volunteers waiting to take these babies home to provide temporary foster care.

#3. Discounted Adoption Fee Weekend
The Pet Care Foundation is sponsoring
the
Spring 'Em
adoption event
on Saturday, March 13 and Sunday, March 14, 2020.
Visit any of our six LA Animal Services Centers during the discounted adoption fee weekend offering:
- Reduced adoption fees for all dogs and puppies
- Waived adoption fees for cats
- Adoption fees for kittens will be waived through a generous grant from the ASPCA.

Let's Go on a Furry Field Trip!
|
Our short-term foster program encourages animal-loving Angelenos to go for a walk around their neighborhoods or take a hike in the hills with one (or two) of our amazing dogs.
Each
Furry Field Trip
excursion provides our animal friends a much-needed break from kennel life, and can even be a great way to help increase an animal's chance for adoption!
In addition to the socialization these pets receive, we also get to learn about about their personalities, as well as provide opportunities to promote them, both on their outings and social media.

Dog Dental Hygiene:
Good Teeth Promotes Good Health
|
If your pet has bad breath, that odor might signify a serious health risk.
Tarter on the teeth may not only damage your dog'’s teeth and gums, but the bacteria may affect internal organs as well.
Here are some tips to help keep your dog's breath fresh and teeth clean:
- Regularly brushing your pet's teeth is the single most effective thing you can do between professional cleanings.
- Daily brushing is ideal, but we realize that's not always realistic. If you can brush your pet's teeth at least three times per week, you're doing a great job!
- If you don’t know how to brush Fido’s teeth, ask your veterinarian.

Furry Field Trip
program helped PJ's mom learn more about her and how she would fit in their family. "I LOVE this program," said PJ's mom. "I know it makes a huge difference to dogs, but it also really helped us make the best choice for our family."

As a thank you for adopting an animal companion from LA Animals Services, we have teamed up with COACH Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills for a special fundraiser. Preview the Spring 2020 Collection and shop at this store from 11am to 1pm on Saturday, Feb.29, and 20% of the total sales during that 2-hour window will be donated back to the LA Animal Services Animal Welfare Trust Fund. Recent and past adopters (who show a photo of their pet) will also receive a special gift with purchase, while supplies last.

Movie Preview and Orientation for Kitten Bottle Fosters

SNEAK PREVIEW - The new episode, "Shelter Me: In Times of Need," is hosted by two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank and features an innovative program where Alzheimer’s facilities bottle feed and foster kittens. This not only provides the cats the 24-hour care they need to survive but also engages the seniors at the memory care facilities in profound ways. We will be showing this story before it airs on PBS and, hopefully, inspire volunteers to be kitten bottle feeders and fosters. Please join us for a fun and inspirational evening!
