Dear LA Civil Rights Family,

Courage doesn’t always speak loudly. Sometimes it shows up in quiet ways — checking on a neighbor, choosing kindness, staying present when things feel uncertain.

From championing disability rights during Disability Pride Month to uplifting the deep cultural and spiritual contributions of Muslim Angelenos during Muslim Heritage Month, July reminds us of how progress moves through people. We improve the lives of others by speaking up, and through leadership rooted in care, dignity, and respect.

We also recognize the fear many families are feeling right now. Immigration sweeps, acts of discrimination, and silence in the face of harm are causing real pain. Moments like these demand more than words—they call for human connection and unity. Therefore, we're here to uplift Know Your Rights workshops hosted by the Community Investment for Families Department (CIFD). These sessions offer tools to help you stay informed. We encourage you to explore and share them.

In addition, to unite all of Los Angeles, we are officially launching the Just Say Hello message. The campaign is rooted in something simple but powerful. When we choose to connect, we begin to break down barriers policies alone cannot reach.

At the LA Civil Rights Department, we believe in an #LAForAll — a city where everyone belongs. Whether you're showing up for a neighbor, attending a workshop, or simply choosing kindness today, YOU are part of our vision!

Keep the faith and keep the fight,

Capri Maddox, Esq.

Executive Director

LA Civil Rights Department

Upcoming Workshops

For many in our city, fear of raids and immigration enforcement has made it harder to move freely, seek help, or even leave the house.

This is why our partners at the Community Investment for Families Department are offering free online Know Your Rights workshops to help immigrant workers, business owners, and families understand their legal protections and options. These virtual sessions are open to all and available in English and Spanish and offer clarity, resources, and peace of mind. Click here for more resources in 39 languages.

Stay tuned for the official launch of Just Say Hello—more than just a campaign; it’s a call to action. By acknowledging simple, everyday acts of kindness, Just Say Hello shows how small moments can break through fear, build trust, and bring people closer together across every corner of Los Angeles.

You may have already seen the message popping up across the city—on sanitation trucks, digital bus stops, and even billboards at LAX. Now, it’s your turn to get involved.

Click here ➡️ Just Say Hello Selfie Submission to upload your selfie, and you could be featured in the campaign. Let's flood Los Angeles with connection, kindness, and one powerful word: "Hello."

This past weekend, Executive Director Capri Maddox delivered remarks at the Virtual Homebuyer Seminar. Thank you to everyone who joined to learn key steps toward homeownership—special thanks to Matt Callahan from Los Angeles Partners in Homeownership for sharing valuable information with Angelenos.

Many of the communities we serve face barriers to building generational wealth due to limited access to reliable resources; however, this seminar helped move the needle in the right direction.
