In collaboration with the Helms Design District, the Eames Foundation, Case Study 2.0, Case Study Adapt, and the Cal Poly SLO LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design:
Barbara Bestor, Joy Chen, Roseanne Landay, Sam Lubell, Leo Marmol, Stephen Phillips, Jennifer Siegal, and Steven Somers
The Eaton Canyon and Palisades fires transformed the lives of so many here in Los Angeles. One year later -- the rebuild effort is well underway -- but it has not been easy. Insurance, permitting, infrastructure, and inflated costs have proven challenging. No simple solution has clearly manifested. Instead a variety of real-world approaches have developed for bringing our communities back together.
Please join us as we take account of some of the best architectural projects permitted and being constructed in the city and county. On exhibit are large-scale models, renderings, and plans. Engage in a conversation of varied building approaches alongside a discussion from our grass-roots leaders spearheading change within our city and county.
Barbara Bestor, FAIA is the principal and founder of Bestor Architecture. Barbara’s award-winning studio is recognized for experimental architecture that engages the city through design, art, and urbanism. She believes that good design creates an engaged urban life by creating “strange beauty” that enhances everyday life experiences through work that reinterprets modernism for contemporary living and cultural activities. She received her undergraduate degree at Harvard University, studied at the Architecture Association in London and received a MArch at SCI-Arc. She is the author of Bohemian Modern, Living in Silver Lake.
Joy Chen is Executive Director of the Every Fire Survivor’s Network (EFSN), the nation’s largest survivor recovery hub, connecting more than 10,000 Eaton, Palisades, Malibu and Topanga fire survivors and allies. A former Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles and global executive recruiter with Heidrick & Struggles, she has spent more than 30 years in global business, media, and public policy. She is also a bestselling author in China; her book Do Not Marry Before Age 30 led the Wall Street Journal to call her an icon for women in China.
Roseanne Landay is the founder of the Pali Condo Captains, created as a voice for the Pacific Palisades condo and townhome owners, as well as the Community Recovery Coordination Council, a broad coalition of volunteer community leaders working to advance coordinated recovery efforts. Roseanne built her career leading strategy and corporate development for companies in the financial services, technology, and travel sectors, and has served on several nonprofit boards. She earned a Master's degree in International Economics and International Relations from the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), The Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor's degree magna cum laude with additional honors in History from the University of California, Berkeley.

His award-winning buildings have been published in Dwell, DOMUS, Der Spiegel, Dezeen, The Architect’s Newspaper, Metropolis, and the San Francisco Chronicle, among many other notable newspapers, magazines, journals, and books.
Jennifer Siegal is Founder and Principal of Office of Mobile Design (OMD), known for her pioneering work in sustainable, prefabricated, and mobile architecture. Her practice explores the relationship between design, environment, and adaptability, with a focus on resilient building strategies, including fire-conscious design in California.
