Volume VI | Jan./Feb. 2019
Dear Alumni & Friends,

Last week at LA, John Hunter (above) inspired us all, opening our eyes to new ways to think about teaching and learning. He presented us with a feature-length documentary on his World Peace Game , in which fourth graders collaborate on fifty interlocking real-world problems and achieve world peace in five hour-long sessions.

More importantly, he led the faculty through a series of generative professional development workshops, and he worked with the ninth-grade history classes on an activity called, Sound Writing: Surviving the Unknown . Both students and faculty experienced what the fourth graders in the documentary described as “mind-stretching, where your brain gets all swishy”.

Our lineup of annual J. William Mees Visiting Scholars , which includes talents such as Lin-Manuel Miranda and Dar Williams, continues to lift LA’s academic experience to new levels.

This year's event coverage included:

This past week, we also celebrated seven finalists in the annual Judith French Poetry Junior Recitation Competition , which was judged by the seniors who were finalists last year.

The winner will be announced in assembly on February 8. Photo gallery here...

Looking ahead, we can see Winterim , which is in its 49th year!

In just a few weeks, once we get through final winter term classes and evaluation week, all LA students and faculty will immerse themselves in hands-on learning here on campus and throughout the world.

I will once again be headed to the Dominican Republic with my colleague Nate Cabot and sixteen LA students to volunteer at The Mariposa Foundation , where we work and learn from Dominican girls and families. This will be LA’s 15th year at the foundation, and the lessons learned can be life-changing. Last year's "team" photo is below.
I send my best to all for a wonderful rest of the winter. I’ll be back in touch this spring with a full report on Winterim and the year ahead.
From the Hillside,
Robinson Moore
Associate Head of School
