Abigail Scharf was introduced to the LAA through her Spanish Service Learning Course at Georgia Tech as a requirement for her master’s degree. The course offers students the chance to learn about the history, challenges, and opportunities of the Latino community in metro Atlanta through volunteer service. Abigail was one of 20 Georgia Tech students who volunteered at the LAA in the 2023 spring semester – spending well over her required 30 hours with our Victims of Violence program.
“My time spent volunteering at the LAA has helped me grow in so many ways. Primarily, I got to speak Spanish with clients, thereby increasing my vocabulary and confidence in utilizing my second language", said Abigail, “In addition, my time spent working with the Victims of Violence program, which included filling out intake information for clients applying for U-Visas and VAWAs, inspired me to apply to law school. I am currently studying for the LSAT and will apply to start law school in the fall of 2024. I hope to specialize in immigration law so I can one day help people navigate the U.S. immigration system.”
Abigail’s volunteer time did not end with the spring semester. She’s continued volunteering with our Victims of Violence program through the summer. “We have been so happy with Abigail’s addition to our team this year. Her work ethic is impeccable and her empathy and professionalism when speaking with clients is amazing. She always goes beyond what is expected from a student to support our team in helping this vulnerable community. The work we do here is impossible without people like her,” said Joselyn Ramirez, Victims of Violence Case Manager.
