LADWP’s Cool LA Initiative Boosts Heat Resilience for Vulnerable Angelenos

In July, LADWP Interim General Manager David Hanson joined Mayor Karen Bass, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, and Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) President and Chief Executive Officer Lourdes Castro Ramirez at a press conference highlighting the installation of more than 1,000 air conditioning units at Nickerson Gardens in Watts. Through LADWP’s Cool LA Initiative, the City’s Heat Mitigation Home Improvement Program has secured over half a million dollars in rebates to purchase over 2,000 air-conditioning units for HACLA residents.

Now Available: 2025-26 Power Infrastructure Plan

Our recently released 2025-26 Power Infrastructure Plan outlines the key investments needed to ensure a resilient grid while supporting our clean energy future. This year’s report highlights the achievements from fiscal year 2024-25 and the goals for 2025-26. Streamlined Design Standards for Customers Released

LADWP has introduced new pre‑engineered design templates and updated construction standards to help customers more quickly move electric services requests through the approval process—providing clearer guidance, reduced guesswork, and streamlined solutions for common design challenges. The improvements reflect our efforts under Power Ready LA and Executive Directive 19 to make it easier for projects to advance in Los Angeles.

LADWP Crews Respond to Hollywood Hills Water Main Break

Early August, LADWP crews completed repairs on a water main break along Wonderland Avenue in the Hollywood Hills and restored service to all affected neighbors within a day. After crews repaired two leaks, LADWP advised customers to flush taps briefly. Water quality remained safe, and support was available through LADWP hotlines.

Our LADWP water system experiences 2-4 water pipe breaks per day, and we proactively monitor the water system for leaks using a variety of technologies and practices. With proactive pipe replacement, our pipe leak rate is 36% lower than the national industry average of 25 leaks per 100 miles in FY 24-25.

These facilities mark a major milestone in the cleanup and remediation of the San Fernando Basin. They also support Mayor Bass’ Climate Action Plan, which outlines LA’s goals for climate resilience and water sustainability, including achieving a 70% local water supply by 2035.

Community Input Shapes Headworks Restoration Park Project

Planning is underway for Headworks Restoration Park, a new passive use recreation park at the Tom LaBonge Headworks Water Complex near Griffith Park. The future park will offer open space, habitat restoration, and nature- based experiences that celebrate the City’s water history. On August 13, community members joined an interactive workshop and breakout sessions to share ideas and help guide the park’s design. This was the first of three workshops; visit LADWP.com/Headworks for upcoming dates.
