December 2024

Happy Holidays and a Greener, Cleaner New Year!

As we close out the new year, we celebrate a huge step forward in our transition to a clean energy future! The Eland Solar & Storage Center, a large-scale solar installation and battery storage system serving LADWP, began commercial operations in November 2024. Located near LADWP’s Barren Ridge Switching station, Eland will supply power to about 250,000 homes and contribute 7% to the City’s energy portfolio. Once fully operational, it will help push the city's clean energy share above 60% by 2025, accelerating the transition to sustainable energy.

“These days, DWP is a climate leader worth following,” writes Sammy Roth of the Los Angeles Times in his recent column about our new Eland solar project in Mojave. Read more about how Eland is helping us reach our clean energy goals and why it’s worth celebrating!

LADWP Water Workers Rescue Customer's Fallen Phone

Members of LADWP’s Harbor District team were recognized by LADWP CEO & Chief Engineer Janisse Quiñones for the efforts to save the day for a customer in need. In late October, an LADWP customer flagged down Senior Water Utility Worker James Uchimiya and Water Utility Worker Jeffrey Cisneros Pineda as they passed by in their work truck.

She explained that she had just parked at the curb to unload luggage after a long,

tiring trip, when her phone slipped from her hand and disappeared down a grated drain.

Without hesitation, Mr. Uchimiya and Mr. Pineda stopped their truck, opened the manhole cover, and went down to retrieve the phone. The customer sent a letter of thanks, saying that Mr. Uchimiya and Mr. Pineda “truly were my heroes today. Their willingness to stop and help, even though they were just passing by, made all the difference.”
