Happy New Year!

We welcomed the New Year with record stormwater capture numbers! Following the biggest storm of the rainy season so far, we estimate that the cumulative amount of stormwater captured from October 1, 2022, through January 10, 2023, is nearly 32,500 acre-feet. That's about 10.6 billion gallons—enough water to serve 139,000 households for a year or equivalent to filling 16,000 Olympic-size swimming pools!

Residential customers can help by capturing their own rainwater as well. Our rebates range from up to $50 for rain barrels that hold at least 50 gallons of water, and from $300 to $500 for cisterns ranging in size from 200 to over 1,000 gallons. Take advantage now!

Stormwater capture is one piece of the puzzle to becoming more reliant on local water supplies. It is one we are heavily invested in and one where we are doing everything we can to divert some of that rainwater from the ocean to replenish our groundwater basin.

Energy and Sanitation Bills

Over the weekend, we applied $85 million in bill credits to eligible residential utility customers’ accounts to help struggling households with past-due energy and sanitation bills. Customers can view their specific credit amounts on the LADWP My Account online portal, or when they receive their next bill. Recognizing the devastating financial impacts of the pandemic on families, this relief is the result of our aggressive pursuit and implementation of every resource available to assist its customers.

LADWP Marches at 38th Annual Kingdom Day Parade

LADWP General Manager and Chief Engineer Martin L. Adams proudly marched with LADWP employees, many representing the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) at the 38th Annual Kingdom Day Parade. The contingent featured a large LADWP boom truck used in electrical linework and two of the latest electric vehicles in our fleet, including an F-150.

The Kingdom Day Parade is America’s largest birthday celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year’s parade theme is “Making America The Last Best Hope of The World.” The Kingdom Day Parade has in past years attracted more than a million people to view the procession that steps off onto Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard at Arlington Blvd.

At LADWP, we are committed to honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by building a stronger Los Angeles through service, innovation and opportunity.

Mono Lake Basin Provides Critical Water Supply

The Mono Basin continues to provide a reliable, affordable water supply for Los Angeles and benefits the water supply for California overall by offsetting the need for LADWP to attempt to obtain additional water from other water systems, such as the State Water Project/Bay Delta and the Colorado River, which are severely strained. The good news is that, as of January 4, 2023, the Mono Lake level was measured at nearly two feet higher than the minimum level of 6,377 acre-feet set by the State Water Resources Control Board to govern the amount of water that can be diverted from the creeks. Due to the significant precipitation from recent rainstorms in the Mono Basin, the lake level is likely to rise further.

The State Water Resources Control Board is expected to hold a public workshop on February 15 to discuss issues surrounding the level of Mono Lake. Visit the State Board calendar for agenda updates and meeting information.

Since the early 1980s LADWP has been dedicated to the environmental restoration of the Mono Basin, a unique and beautiful region in the Eastern Sierra.
