Our Juneteenth Celebration Continues

Last week, we kicked off the Juneteenth celebration by unveiling a new photo exhibit "And Still We Rise!" at the John Ferraro Building in Downtown Los Angeles. The exhibit spotlights the imagery and important milestones of the Black experience in Los Angeles and the United States at large. Commissioned by LADWP’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and curated by Jill Moniz, the exhibit is organized through a timeline structure, which features historic events throughout the history of the United States and Los Angeles.

Exhibit highlights include President Abraham Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, Major General Gordon Granger enforcing the manumission of Texas’s enslaved population, Los Angeles’s first Black Mayor Tom Bradley, first Black woman to travel to space Mae Jemison, and the first Black woman to be elected Mayor in Los Angeles Karen Bass.

The exhibit was unveiled during employee event in honor of Juneteenth featuring President of the Board of Water and Power Commissioners Cynthia McClain-Hill, LADWP General Manager and Chief Engineer Martin L. Adams, and a choir performance of “Lift Every Voice” and “The Star Spangled Banner.” Members of the public are invited to view the exhibit throughout the summer.

We continued the celebration on Monday, June 19 at the Leimert Park Juneteenth Festival powered by LADWP. Our presence included an on-stage panel discussion on the "Future of EVs" and a booth where we shared information on jobs, rebates and tips for keeping utility bills low and staying cool this summer.

LADWP is a proud sponsor and supporter of the Girls Academic Leadership Academy, the only all-girl school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Over the last two weeks of May, LADWP employees representing the LADWP Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers met with several classrooms to share their personal career stories and the important role that affinity groups played in their academic and professional paths. At LADWP, we are committed to supporting women in our workforce and providing resources for career advancement, mentorship, and work-life balance. As of May 2023, there are 2,589 women in LADWP's workforce of more than 11,760.

Baby Hawks Arrive at Chatsworth Nature Preserve

The Chatsworth Nature Preserve nursery was in full swing this spring. Including this season’s babies, 18 baby hawks have hatched at the preserve over the last four years. Mother hawks teach their babies how to fly by tempting them with recently caught rodents and once they’re capable of flight, babies are taught how to hunt. Check out our video to learn more.

LADWP in the Community: Another Successful Day of Service

Last month, LADWP employees participated in the Department of Public Works’ Day of Service event to beautify and clean five historically Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander communities across LA: Chinatown, Thai Town, Little Tokyo, Historic Filipinotown, and Koreatown/Little Bangladesh.

LADWP employees, joined by family and friends, rolled up their sleeves to clean up and beautify our streets. This was LADWP’s second time partnering in the event alongside many other city and local government participants.

Vote in Your L.A. Neighborhood Council Election!

LA’s 99 Neighborhood Councils together form the grassroots level of the Los Angeles City government. The system was established in 1999 to connect their communities to City Hall. Neighborhood Councils advocate on issues like homelessness, housing, public safety, parks, and sustainability. They also provide a local voice in delivering City services to their communities. Find your Neighborhood Council and get involved.

Neighborhood Council elections start at the end of March in West LA; the last one is June 22 in the Southeast Valley. Both Vote-By-Mail and in-person voting at the polls are available this season, but mail ballots are only shared by request - they aren’t sent out automatically to voters.
