Spring is here and we’re happy to see the sun again, too! But the recent storms also had an upside. The record rainfall in February helped boost L.A.’s local water supply through stormwater captured at our spreading grounds, large facilities like the one pictured above designed to help capture rain and refill our local aquifers. We captured more than 13.5 billion gallons of stormwater last month, compared to 8.4 billion gallons of stormwater captured in February 2023. That is enough water to serve nearly 165,000 households for a year, or equivalent to filling more than 20,000 Olympic-sized pools!
Together with water conservation, recycled water, and groundwater remediation, stormwater capture continues to be a key component to developing our local water supplies and reducing our reliance on higher cost imported water. Stay tuned for updates on our snowpack and L.A.’s water supply outlook for the year in next month’s newsletter!
