May is AAPI Heritage Month

A graphic with a blue background and text that reads Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Each May, we celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month across the U.S. and at LADWP. We recognize the important contributions of members of this community, who can trace their heritage from more than 50 countries and ethnic groups in East, South, Central, Southeast, and West Asia, or the major subregions of Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia.

AAPI community members have made important and lasting contributions to the fabric of our nation. At LADWP, we have more than 2,000 employees who identify as AAPI. Rising incidents of Asian hate and the recent tragedies in Monterey Park and Allen, Texas are sobering reminders that we need to continue to create space for cultural understanding and diversity, equity and inclusion.

We established an Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and have been deeply committed to advancing these principles assertively into all aspects of the Department, from operations to policy and decision-making and to our programs, resources, and services to better serve our employees, our customers and our communities.

On May 6, Los Angeles students, community members, and prospective job candidates gathered in droves and joined several of our employees at LADWP's Truesdale Training Center for the inaugural Women’s Career and Wellness Expo!

The location usually used for line worker training was transformed to showcase a variety of utility careers available to women, in a family-friendly setting.

The regional event included a recruitment fair with information about skilled craft and professional jobs at LADWP, along with equipment demonstrations and other hands-on activities.

New Website Launched to Track Priority Pole Repairs

We recently launched an interactive map to track the ongoing repair work to power poles, cross-arms, and other overhead electrical equipment identified through its inspection program.

The map can be accessed at ladwp.com/PriorityRepairs and is updated daily to show the locations of poles remaining to be repaired. It can be accessed from the ladwp.com homepage as well.

Our crews are currently working as quickly as possible and are committed to the completion of its “Priority 1” repairs by May 16, 2023.

LADWP reminds customers to use caution around any downed or dangling wires or poles. If you see a downed wire, always assume it is LIVE. Do not assume a downed wire is a communication line. Never touch ANY wire that is down or dangling and immediately dial 9-1-1.

Crews Prepare for Runoff from Record Snowpack Melt

We have begun preparing early for this year’s runoff season, which is the period in which temperatures rise and the snow melts. We anticipate about 1 million acre-feet, or 326 billion gallons of water that will need to be managed. The runoff season is expected to last through the summer months, requiring significant preparation work and coordination with partner agencies in the Eastern Sierra to implement public safety measures to mitigate the potential for flooding.

Vote in Your L.A. Neighborhood Council Election!

LA’s 99 Neighborhood Councils together form the grassroots level of the Los Angeles City government. The system was established in 1999 to connect their communities to City Hall. Neighborhood Councils advocate on issues like homelessness, housing, public safety, parks, and sustainability. They also provide a local voice in delivering City services to their communities. Find your Neighborhood Council and get involved.

Neighborhood Council elections start at the end of March in West LA; the last one is June 22 in the Southeast Valley. Both Vote-By-Mail and in-person voting at the polls are available this season, but mail ballots are only shared by request - they aren’t sent out automatically to voters.
