September is National Preparedness Month With wildfires across the state triggering evacuations, the recent earthquake rattling us awake at night and extreme-weather incidents like the record-breaking heat wave over Labor Day weekend resulting in power outages across Southern California, we’re reminded of the importance of always being prepared for emergencies. We're working daily to strengthen our grid's resilience, and encourage you to plan and prepare for the unexpected.  Take time to build an emergency kit, put an emergency plan in place, and practice it with your family before the next emergency hits!

2020 Urban Water Management Plan We’re in the process of developing our 2020 Urban Water Management Plan (UWMP), which serves as the City of Los Angeles’ master plan for reliable water supply and resources management. Updated every five years, the 2020 UWMP update incorporates efforts to build a more resilient, reliable and sustainable local water supply. Community meetings are planned for early 2021. Essential Work Continues Triple digit temperatures and extreme power demand over the Labor Day weekend hit our local distribution grid hard, overheating and overloading distribution equipment. In some neighborhoods, equipment was running 200% of its maximum capacity due to extreme heat and demand! Our crews worked around the clock in extreme heat and tight spaces to make complex repairs to high voltage equipment and get power restored across the city. If you were affected by one of these outages, we thank you for your patience as our crews worked relentlessly to get your power back on as quickly and safely as possible.

Partnering with Neighborhood Councils We're the only department in the City of Los Angeles with a formal  Memorandum of Understanding with Neighborhood Councils committing to regular and ongoing communication about our programs and policies. The DWP-NC MOU Oversight and Advocacy Committees meet every first Saturday of the month at 8:45 a.m. In order to keep the public and our employees safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic, meetings will be broadcast via webcast .
