National Preparedness Month: Ready for Anything

Graphic with an orange and gray background featuring a first aid kit and clipboard icons. Text overlay that reads September is National Emergency Preparedness Month. Be Ready!

At LADWP, we join the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in recognizing September as National Preparedness Month. Recent natural emergencies, including Hurricane Hilary and a 5.1 earthquake in Ojai, again shed light on the importance of emergency preparedness.

This September, take time to prepare yourself and your family for the unexpected and offer support to those in your life who may be part of the most vulnerable communities. For information on how you can stay ready for anything, explore the helpful preparedness tips and resources in the link below.

Be Ready for Anything

First Tropical Storm in 83 years Hits Los Angeles

In late August, there were reports that Hurricane Hilary would make landfall in Los Angeles, which prompted LADWP to take proactive measures to ensure the safety and reliability of our power and water systems.

In anticipation of Hurricane Hilary’s arrival, our power restoration crews were fully staffed and ready to respond to any power outages caused by the forecasted wind, rain, thunderstorms, and flooding. We had additional field crews that regularly work on distribution system construction projects available and ready to assist in handling any increase in outages that may occur. Our tree-clearing crews were also available and ready to address outages that could impact power lines and infrastructure caused by downed trees.

Both internal and external staff worked round the clock to restore services to approximately 45,000 affected LADWP customers out of the 1.5 million from the start of the storm.

Thank you to our LADWP staff and crews for their hard work and dedication through this historic storm!

LADWP Crews Assist Local Hospital in Time of Need

Nearly 30 LADWP electrical staff reported to the Adventist Health White Memorial Hospital in Boyle Heights to assist the hospital and its contractor with an on-site power failure that occurred during Tropical Storm Hilary. LADWP staff assisted the hospital and its contractor in successfully making repairs to the hospital’s internal electric equipment that resulted in a loss of power within the hospital campus.

This was an extraordinary situation that directly impacted patient health and safety as well as threatened a critical health resource for the local community. As such, LADWP jumped into action and was proud to assist White Memorial staff with getting power flow at the hospital back up and running safely.
