Quarterly Newsletter | April 2026

Earth Day is a celebration of natural resources, remarkable landscapes, and the protection of wildlife in our backyards. In the Eastern Sierra, LADWP's shared responsibility is to thoughtfully steward the lands we manage and support a healthy watershed throughout the region. We remain committed to protecting biodiversity, habitat conservation, and the ecological restoration of the Owens Valley, Long Valley, and Mono Basin.

As you enjoy these lands, we encourage you to recreate responsibly and be part of the journey to continue caring for these beloved places for this generation and the next.

ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS

Lower Owens River Habitat Restoration

In honor of Earth Day, we're proud to share our work as committed stewards of the Eastern Sierra. We've re-watered the 62 miles of the Lower Owens River and are actively improving 78,000 acres of land along the river.

The Lower Owens River Project is one of the largest river habitat restoration efforts in the Western U.S.

Bi-State Sage-Grouse Protection

LADWP has contributed to protecting habitat used for nesting and breeding by the Bi-State Sage-Grouse. In partnership with the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service and other stakeholders, we developed a Conservation Strategy and Long Valley Adaptive Management Plan for Bi-State Sage-Grouse.

NEWS

April 1 Final Snowpack

Every year, on April 1, our hydrographers complete LADWP’s final snow surveys, and this year reported the Eastern Sierra snowpack measured 24% of normal. This year’s water supply forecast from the Los Angeles Aqueduct is expected to meet 40% of Los Angeles’ annual water demand.

For more details, read our full press release in our news section at LADWP.com/EasternSierra.

Annual Mono Lake Level Reading

LADWP annually measures Mono Lake's surface elevation on April 1 to inform water supply forecasting and management for Los Angeles. Mono Lake Committee and partner organizations gathered to measure the lake level.  Mono Lake’s surface elevation measured 6,382.75 feet above sea level.

This information will help guide the Mono Basin Annual Operations Plan, expected to be released in May 2026.

Crowley Lake Boat Inspections Ahead of Fish Opener

Boat inspections kick off opening weekend, starting April 22.

All boats must be checked before launching. If your boat shows signs of contamination or contains water or debris that could harbor invasive mussels, it won’t be allowed on the lake.

Starting this year, every boat needs a free Eastern Sierra Golden Mussel Collective sticker, which you’ll get during your inspection

IN THE COMMUNITY

Celebrating Earth Day at Bishop City Park

On April 12, we celebrated Earth Day at the Bishop City Park hosted by our partners at the Rotary Club of Bishop and the Inyo Council for the Arts! LADWP staff had a delightful time connecting with community members on job opportunities, community resources, and sharing about the work we do in the Eastern Sierra. Until next year!

Owens Valley High School visits LADWP in Los Angeles

Last month, we welcomed Owens Valley High School students led by Mr. Savage to Los Angeles for an educational tour of several of our facilities, including Power Plant 1, La Kretz Innovation Campus, and our headquarters at the John Ferraro Building in Downtown Los Angeles. Owens Valley High School is one of our participating Adopt-A-School partners.

Through the Adopt-A-School program, LADWP provides funding for a wide range of educational enhancement activities, from STEM education and literacy enrichment to water and power related topics. We hope to host again soon!

LADWP Career Panel at Bishop Union High School

In partnership with Bishop Union High School, Mrs. Buchholz and LADWP organized a career panel for the mathletes she coaches and teaches. The goal was to introduce students to a wide range of career paths and give students a chance to connect directly with professionals, helping them better understand the type of opportunities available to them at LADWP.

YOUR SAFTEY MATTERS

Reminder to never touch a downed or dangling wire no matter how small, or anyone, or anything in contact with it. Always assume a downed wire is still energized with high voltage electricity. Stay away, and immediately call 9-1-1!

In the event of a power outage, remain calm and be prepared:

  • Always keep a flashlight and extra batteries nearby; never use candles.
  • Switch off all lights except for one so you’ll know when your power returns.
  • Keep a fully charged cell phone on hand.
  • Report your outage location by dialing 1-800-992-8331 and after-hours at 1-833-325-2397.
