LAFAYETTE BOULEVARD AND HARRISON ROAD INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
STARTS NEXT WEEK
Construction to extend a right turn lane and reduce delays at intersection in Spotsylvania will start Monday, Feb. 7
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin construction next week to improve the Lafayette Boulevard and Harrison Road intersection in Spotsylvania County.

Work will begin on Monday, Feb. 7 to expand turn lane capacity to reduce delays at the intersection.

The $1.2 million SMART SCALE project will extend the existing southbound right turn lane on Lafayette Boulevard from Harrison Road to Lee Street. This will improve capacity and reduce congestion for southbound traffic turning onto Harrison Road.

Crews will be working Mondays through Fridays. All travel lanes will be open during peak morning and afternoon hours on weekdays. Single lane closures will be scheduled during daytime and overnight hours. Periodic weekend work may also be needed.

The intersection improvement project is anticipated to be complete in May 2022.

The project contractor is A & M Concrete Corp., of Dulles.

Project Background

Spotsylvania County submitted an application to build this project through Virginia’s SMART SCALE transportation funding program.

SMART SCALE was established to choose the right transportation projects for funding and ensure the best use of limited tax dollars. Potential projects that have been determined to meet a need identified in VTrans – the state’s long-range multi-modal transportation plan – are scored based on safety, congestion, accessibility, land use, economic development and the environment.

Once projects are scored and prioritized, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) has the best information possible to select projects for funding.

To view how funded SMART SCALE projects are advancing toward construction, visit the SMART SCALE Dashboard.
