LAGUNA BLANCA OPENS NEW SCIENCE CENTER
By Joanne Calitri, Montecito Journal

It’s open—and it’s beautiful.

On Monday, September 27, there was a ribbon-cutting and VIP guest reception for the new 5,500 square-foot Center for Science and Innovation at Laguna Blanca School’s Hope Ranch campus, which houses the Nakamura STEM Research and Innovation Lab, the updated Jackson Physics Labs, the Mosher Foundation Outdoor Classroom, Gainey Biology and Chemistry Lab, and the Hagerman Environmental Research Space.

Guests who funded the center included Shuji Nakamura, a Nobel Laureate and UCSB CREE Distinguished Professor in Materials Science, and his wife, Yuki; Jim Jackson of Montecito’s Ann Jackson Family Foundation; Ed and Sue Birch of The Mosher Foundation; Tracy and Michael Bollag; and Elisabeth Fowler, co-chair of the fundraising campaign and recently named Philanthropist of the Year. Sue, a former Laguna Blanca teacher, opened the school’s first computer science lab in the 1980s. Jackson at his Physics Lab shared, “The campus improved their science facility to offer a broader array of programs, and our family is proud to support it now and in the future.”

AN ARTIST AND HIS DOG
Laguna Visual Art Teacher Dug Uyesaka and his adorable pup, Palmer, are featured in a new book entitled "Santa Barbara Artists and Their Dogs," which was created by The Art Council of the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art and highlights the natural bond between dogs and artists. A portrait of them will also be on display in an exhibition through December 18 in the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art's downstairs gallery along with other artists and their dogs.

Kerrie Smith, creative director of “Santa Barbara Artists and Their Dogs” and Arts Council president, spearheaded the creation of the book, which includes portraits of each of the 70 artists with their canine companions as well as short, touching and often humorous essays.

“We hope we inspire readers to adopt a dog and enjoy the love and affirmation that comes from being one of the pack,” Larson says.
ESTRELLA DRIVE REMINDER
Please help us to be good Hope Ranch neighbors by not using Estrella Drive, which is a private road in Hope Ranch. Las Palmas is a public road and the preferred route to take to and from Laguna Blanca. Thank you!
SWEATER WEATHER IS HERE!
Chilly weather will be with us for a while, so be sure to label all outerwear that comes to school with your child. The Lower School lost & found box contains many uniform sweaters and jackets that have no identifying label, along with plenty of non-uniform and unlabeled items. Remind your child to retrieve outerwear (usually taken off during P.E. and recess) when their playing time ends.

Thank you!

"Getting Ready for the College Search"
Wednesday, October 6 (6-7PM)
via Zoom

Eleventh Grade Parents are invited to join the College Counseling office on the evening of October 6 for a special Zoom program, which will outline Laguna's process for juniors and address any questions you may have.

Topics that will be covered include:
  • SAT/ACT: How do I best prepare? Are these tests going away?
  • GPAs, Schedule Strength, Activities, and Volunteering: what matters most to colleges?
  • How to Use the Summer
  • Building a Tentative College List
  • Do I need an outside college counselor?

Joining us on October 6 will be a panel of college admissions officers—the very people who read Laguna’s applications each year. Most of the program will feature your questions, so please let us know what’s on your mind

We hope to see you there!
PRACTICE ACT AND SAT TEST OPPORTUNITIES COMING WITH REVOLUTION PREP
In the new era of test-optional and test-blind admission, does it still make sense to prepare for the SAT or ACT? Laguna thinks so. Finding which test is right for you and preparing for at least a year could still pay dividends, whether in admission, scholarships, entry to special programs, or perhaps some combination of all three. We’ve partnered with Revolution Prep to offer free diagnostic/practice testing to all Laguna students. Each practice test will take place online.
