LAGUNA TEACHERS AND TEDxLBS ADVISORS MEET FOUNDER OF TEDx CHRIS ANDERSON
This week, Laguna Middle School Teachers and TEDx Advisors Allison Armstrong and Anna Alldredge attended the 2018 TEDWomen Conference in Palm Springs, a three-day event centered on the power of women and girls to be creators and change-makers.

They also had the opportunity to attend a TEDx Workshop to meet fellow TEDx event organizers from around the world and share the most creative and effective event practices.

In addition to hearing from inspiring speakers and attending workshops, the pair learned methods that will support Laguna students in reviewing fundamentals, strengthening and streamlining their teams, honing talks, and generally reframing ways to visualize the event.

"It’s been rewarding to connect with many other educators who are both curious about and impressed by Laguna’s professional model for implementing a TEDx Youth event," says Allison.

One of the main highlights was meeting the Founder of TEDx, Chris Anderson (pictured above). To help prepare for Laguna's event, students in the TEDx Project-Based Leadership class read Chris' book, TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking.

On Friday 11/16, Laguna's Intro to Marine Science class sailed to Anacapa Island for a day of hands-on learning.

Making special appearances along the way included a plethora of marine mammals such as dolphins, seals, sea lions, and a variety of birds including Western seagulls, cormorants, and brown pelicans.

GIVE BACK THROUGH LAGUNA'S 2018 FOSTER CARE HOLIDAY GIFT DRIVE
Two of Laguna Blanca's core values are "Community" and "Character." In keeping with those values, we, as a school, participate in various fundraising efforts throughout the year to assist people, animals, and organizations in need, both locally and globally. It is such a joy to see our students give from the heart and take notice of those less fortunate.

Now in its eighth year, the Foster Child Holiday Gift Drive remains a favorite of many on the Hope Ranch campus! There are more than 800 children in the Santa Barbara County foster care system, and each year LBS does its part to make the holiday season a little brighter for many of these children without permanent homes.

CASA gives us a supply of "wish lists" from children (infants to teens) who are living with foster families or in foster care group homes. Requests include items such as clothes, toys, sports equipment, and gift cards. The name, age, size, and suggested items for each child are also included. Wish lists were offered to students last week in advisory (there is no obligation to participate). Should your child bring one home and you choose not to participate, simply return the list to their advisor or Ms. Valentine as soon as possible.

Gifts are due next Wednesday morning December 5 , when participants bring their unwrapped gifts to Ruston Theater for a special Gr. 5-12 assembly at 10:15AM. CASA representatives will be in attendance, and we'll hand over the hundreds of gifts provided by our families, faculty, and staff. It's a most heartwarming assembly which you are all invited to attend!
LAGUNA FIRST GRADERS LEARN ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF GENEROSITY IN THE HOLIDAY SEASON
FROM THE FIRST GRADE BLOG FABULOUS IN FIRST

As we enter the season of giving, we are learning about generosity in Swooper Citizens. We defined generosity as “showing kindness by giving or sharing something with another person.”

First, we brainstormed ways we can give to other people. Students thought of giving gifts, hugs, smiles, and experiences (like a hike!) to other people.

Next, we did a “scoot” game. In this game, students worked in pairs to read cards hung all around the room. Each card contained a scenario which might or might not depict generosity. After reading each card, they answered, “Did this show generosity?” by circling “yes” or “no” on their note paper.
