BRAVO TO THE TEDxLBS TEAM!

Laguna's inaugural TEDx event was a huge success!

"Yesterday was yet another incredible day to be an Owl. From start to finish, the TEDx event showcased many bold and thought-provoking speakers, as well as the thriving project-based learning culture at Laguna. The inspired thinking that went into the student-produced program was impressive, as was the transformation of the Merovick Gymnasium. Our poised student speakers distinguished themselves, capturing our attention and opening our hearts," says Rob Hereford. "Please join me in giving a huge thanks and congratulations to Anna Alldredge, Allison Armstrong, and the TEDx students for providing us with such a transformative event for our school. I'm so proud of this community!"

A highlight of this powerful event was the talk by Santa Barbara Fire Engineer Kevin Jones, in which he recounted his experience as a first responder for both the Thomas Fire and Montecito Mudslides. Click here to read the full article.

Check out the student film created by Camila Lemere '18 that opened the daylong program.

Stay tuned for event photos and video of speeches in the coming weeks!
GIRLS SOCCER TEAM RECEIVES MORE THAN A WIN
Laguna Blanca girls soccer scored twice in a couple of minutes to push past Cambria's Coast Union in a 3-2 non-league home victory last Friday night.

Bea Lujan '21 recorded two goals, her first coming eight minutes in off a through-ball feed from  Julia Guglielmo '20 .

After the Owls win, the Laguna Blanca and Coast Union teams huddled as Coast Union coach Brooklin Brumund announced a fundraiser for Laguna students whose families were affected by the Thomas Fire and Montecito Mudslides.

"For our entire team, this gesture was a reminder of how important community is," Owls head coach Kevin Shertzer said, "and how far a simple act of kindness can go in helping to heal the deep scars of these recent events."

Jack describes Seven Hours as “a send-up of the classic romantic comedy in which a man and a woman, who are both unhappy with their lives, find each other and try to stay together despite the odds stacked against them.”

HEALING IN THE AFTERMATH OF TRAGEDY
Reprinted from Santa Barbara Independent

Debbie Allen, LCSW, is a psychotherapist at Family Therapy Institute of Santa Barbara and a professor at Antioch University. She shares some words of wisdom on recovering from tragedy:

"There are ways for all of us to use lessons from our childhood to help us heal in the aftermath of a fire and a storm we will remember for a very long time...

There is something that many of us have not yet done. We have not lit a fire in our fireplace or sat by a campfire. Note that this also offers an opportunity. To take something that has been such a source of fear and pain and then to also recognize its beauty in a controlled setting is to understand that we can transform painful content into something good."
