10 QUESTIONS WITH 12TH GRADE STUDENT ROTH YIN
It's a new school year with a sea of new and familiar faces and personalities. We thought it would be fun to feature some of the amazing members of the Laguna community so you could get to know them better. Let us introduce you to Senior Roth Yin who was kind enough to be our first subject. Enjoy!

NAME: Roth Yin | GRADE 12

What one word best describes you?
Open. I wait to be filled by different people, by how they perceive me.

Which time period in history would you like to visit?
When hominins became human, because it would tell me that I, just like my ancestors, am vulnerable in surroundings but also strong in terms of willpower.

FIVE STUDENTS EARN GOLD CIRCLE AWARDS
Five Laguna Blanca students were recognized in the 34 th annual Gold Circle Awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, CSPA, an international student press association that recognizes superior work by student journalists.

“This recognition is significant in that our student journalists compete with top-ranked public and private schools with staffs three to four times the size of our staff,” said Journalism teacher Trish McHale.

STUDENTS BREAK OUT TO CREATE, COLLABORATE, AND COMMUNICATE
Technology Instructor Nissa Hales and Science Instructor Landon Neustadt led seventh grade students in a BreakoutEDU session, in which students take ownership of their learning and use teamwork and critical thinking to solve a series of challenging puzzles. In addition to the content knowledge needed to succeed in a specific initiative, all Breakout EDU activities require critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication.

SWOOP GROUPS UTILIZE COMMUNITY TIME FOR FUN NEW ELECTIVES
NEW THIS YEAR IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL!

Swoop Group s are weekly electives offered to Middle School students every Friday during community time. They provide yet another opportunity for our fifth through eighth graders to connect with each other and explore topics and interests beyond Laguna's core curriculum and electives. Swoop Groups also provide students a chance to connect with a wider variety of MS and US faculty.

US student club leaders will eventually lead Swoop Groups to get MS students involved in their clubs. This quarter, Natalie McCafferey '20 is leading a Farm Club Swoop Group for MS students, and next quarter, Storyteller and Sock Club members plan to have US student leaders offer Swoop Group activities.

"The first round of sign ups was a grand success," says MS Advisory Coordinator Anna Alldredge. A few Swoop Group activities to look forward to in the future include: Juggling, American Sign Language, Improv Theater, Knitting, Martial Arts & Yoga, Coloring, Miming, Life Skills, and No Soup For You: Seinfeld Appreciation Level 1.

Last year at the Lower School, a similar program called Explorations was rolled out and was a big hit among students. "I like how Swoop Group deepens the continuity across Grades EK-8," adds Alldredge.
