LANE CLOSURES, TRAFFIC SHIFTS CONTINUE ON I-264 EAST IN NORFOLK AND VIRGINIA BEACH FOR BRIDGE WORK

Editor's Note: This version has been updated to reflect a change in the schedule dates, indicated in red below.

VIRGINIA BEACH – As construction progresses on Phase II of the I-64/I-264 Interchange Improvements Project, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will continue with a series of lane closures and traffic shifts on I-264 east for bridge work.

Motorists should stay in their travel lanes and avoid lane changes when driving through the work zone, as lane configurations may be temporarily changed from previous travels through the corridor.

This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change. Motorists should stay alert and be mindful of crews working alongside the roadway at all times.

Sept. 9-13

Beginning as early as Sept. 9 at 9 p.m., crews will implement a traffic shift, from the I-64 flyovers to just west of Witchduck Road (exit 16), that will split traffic on I-264 east into two lanes on the mainline and two lanes on the collector-distributor (CD) road.

This temporary split-traffic configuration, which is scheduled to be in place through Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 5 a.m., will require all traffic planning to exit at Witchduck Road (exit 16) to utilize the collector-distributor lanes (outside set), via Military Highway - Chesapeake - Newtown Road (exits 13-14-15), instead of mainline I-264 east (inside set) while the center, triple-lane closure is in place.

Sept. 13-21

As the final part of this bridge work, crews will implement consecutive triple to double left-lane closures from the I-64 flyovers to just west of Witchduck Road (exit 16) on the I-264 mainline. The CD lanes will not be impacted during this temporary traffic configuration. This temporary traffic configuration will begin with triple-lane closures as early as Sept. 13 at 9 p.m., through Sept. 21 at 5 a.m.. As construction progresses during the week, crews will reduce this work to double left-lane closures.
