VIRGINIA BEACH – As construction progresses on Phase II of the I-64/I-264 Interchange Improvements Project, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation will continue with a series of lane closures and traffic shifts on I-264 east for bridge work.
Motorists should stay in their travel lanes and avoid lane changes when driving through the work zone, as lane configurations may be temporarily changed from previous travels through the corridor.
Additional lane closures and traffic shifts will be required to complete this work and will be announced as the schedule is finalized. This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change. Motorists should stay alert and be mindful of crews working alongside the roadway at all times.
Beginning as early as tonight, Aug. 26 at 9 p.m., crews will implement a traffic shift, from the I-64 flyovers to just west of Witchduck Road (exit 16), that will split traffic on I-264 east into three lanes on the mainline and one lane on the collector-distributor road.
This temporary configuration will place traffic for the first time on the newly widened I-264 east bridge over the former Norfolk Southern Railroad.
This temporary traffic configuration, estimated to be in place through Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 5 a.m., will require all traffic planning to exit at Witchduck Road (exit 16) to follow the signed detour in place to utilize the collector-distributor lanes (outside set), via Military Highway - Chesapeake - Newtown Road (exits 13-14-15), instead of mainline I-264 east (inside set) while the center, triple-lane closure is in place.
