President's Message

Hi all! I hope you have enjoyed the summer!

We have been very busy at Langston, with the return of the Langston Picnic in June, the Membership Event in July, and the Judicial Reception last week. We also are partnering with the Japanese American Bar Association in support of the California Task Force to study and develop reparation proposals, and Langston joined with other California bar associations to submit an amicus brief to the United States Supreme Court on the Harvard University and University of North Carolina affirmative action cases.

It has been great connecting and working with you on all of these matters, and we look forward to engaging you even more this fall. That said, there a couple of items about which we wanted to notify you.

First, please save the date of October 15, 2022 for Langston’s annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Additional details will be forthcoming, but we look forward to honoring four legal giants – Hon. Huey P. Cotton Jr., Hon. Brenda J. Penny, and Lifetime Members Carla D. Pittman and Alvin Pittman – and we hope that you will join us for this awesome event.

Second, Langston will hold its annual election of officers during our regular meeting on October 11, 2022. All Langston members are encouraged to attend and participate in the election. Please note that, consistent with our Bylaws, dues must be paid by August 31, 2022 to participate in the election (except that any new members may be eligible to vote provided that dues are paid by September 11, 2022). Likewise, if you are interested in serving on the Langston Board next year, please send us an email to express your interest (info@langstonbar.org).

Finally, please join me in congratulating several of our Langston members (and Lifetime members) on their outstanding accomplishments:

  • Lifetime Member and Sergeant-at-Arms Jennifer Fisher Golden received the National Bar Association’s inaugural Power 50 Award, and she was elected as NBA Secretary for the 2022-23 term.
  • Lifetime Member and Entertainment Committee Co-Chair Marjorie C. Williams retired from the United States Air Force in July, after 22 years of service to our country, including abroad with NATO, supporting Air Operations in Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, and in several countries, like the U.K., Turkey, Argentina, South Korea, Belgium, Germany, and Greece.
  • Lifetime Member and Treasurer Melvin Felton was recognized as one of the “Top 40 Under 40” attorneys by the National Bar Association.
  • Board Member Justin Palmer was appointed as the JNE Commission Chair for 2023.
  • Lifetime Member Almuhtada Smith was recognized as one of the “Top 40 Under 40” attorneys by the National Bar Association.
  • Langston Past President Jamon Hicks, and Langston Lifetime Member Rodney Diggs, received the NBA’s Power 50 Award.

Please notify us of your accomplishments as well. We always like to highlight the accomplishments of our members. Look forward to seeing you again soon.

All the best!

Daniel Prince, Esq.

2022 Langston President

8/4/22 Langston Annual Judicial Reception

Langston's Annual Judicial Reception returned, in-person, after a 2-year pandemic break. A successful Judicial Reception starts with recognition of esteemed Judges, and it was certainly a Red Carpet Evening of Star Judges! This year, we recognized the outstanding contributions and leadership to the bench and bar of District Judge Otis D. Wright, II, District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett, District Judge Fred W. Slaughter, and LA Superior Court Judge David S. Cunningham, III.

Held at Sony Pictures Studios, catered by Wolfgang Puck Catering, Langston Bench & Bar Chair, AUSA Amanda Miller Bettinelli did a fantastic job planning and coordinating, along with Langston 2022 Officer Valarie Dean, making the 2022 Reception a huge success. The program was accentuated by Co-Host, the Association of African American California Judicial Officers, Inc. (AAACJO), its 2022 President Hon. Huey Cotton and member Hon. Karen Ackerson Gauff, whose assistance and input were invaluable.

With great appreciation to our Reception Sponsors: Sidley, City National Bank, JAMS, Signature Resolution, and Weaver Land Law.
