President's Message
Maintaining the Values of Langston 

While we have faced many challenges this year, what has remained tried and true is Langston’s values.

At our recent Past Presidents reception, it was an honor to hear from several past presidents ranging from the 1970’s to the early 2000’s and be reminded of the foundation on which Langston was built on. Retired Judge Dion Morrow, who was President in 1971 – only the second President of this organization, regaled us with stories from those early years and how at that time, while known as the Langston Law Club, there was much more of an emphasis on “club,” then “law.” Its focus then was to create a place of community where this small group of African American attorneys could gather for support and fellowship.

While Langston has grown into an organization with over twenty committees which are both subject matter and practice area based, the organization has evolved and adapted at every chapter in response to the needs of its members. As we continue to grow, the values that Langston represents have remained consistent.

At this new juncture, it is fascinating to imagine how we will find new ways to adapt and pivot this year and beyond. But I am also inspired about what hasn't changed and never will: the foundation of Langston is the community - the member support, the friendships, the networking, the ethics, and the service. Indeed, these are the values that continue to make Langston exceptional. We have a great opportunity in this time to embrace the change that will strengthen us even as we remain true to Langston’s core values.

This position will focus on family law litigation (primarily appellate litigation), legislation, policy, and public education, and will work with our Family Law Director. This position will also work on our efforts to abolish and replace the existing child welfare system while also providing technical assistance to attorneys representing parents involved in the child welfare system. NCLR is a strong and effective national legal organization dedicated to achieving full civil and human rights for LGBTQ people and their families through impact litigation, public policy work, direct legal services, and community and public education. NCLR is an intersectional feminist organization committed to advancing justice within our organization and beyond.
