All first-year students must complete a mandatory appointment with their assigned LAS academic advisor in both the fall and spring terms of their first year in order to be able to register for classes for the next term. First-year students will be contacted via their UIC email with additional information about this requirement; however, students should feel free to make an LAS advising appointment at any point during their first two terms at UIC.

"Where the Crawdads Sing had me hooked from the beginning! This is a story of survival with an amazing lesson on assumptions! It is very emotional and really shows the power of a strong independent female character that despite her horrible childhood circumstances and experiences was able to not only survive, but thrive. Kya, the main character, is a perfect example of someone who hit rock bottom, yet made it to the top. This book tugged at my emotions in so many ways and also made me appreciate nature so much more! "One of my favorite novels that I have read multiple times and even watched the movie for is The Giver by Lois Lowry. This novel is about a dystopian society where one person cannot differ from another. The characters in the novel try to break the system by making themselves different but fail to do so because it isn't what their government wants. This novel relates to social identity because throughout the entire novel, no character was able to explore their social identity due to a strict enforcement. Up until today, some people can't explore their social identity due to different beliefs, or standards that they live by. Exploring and acknowledging social identity is so important in today's society because that's what helps differentiate one person from the next, where in this novel, no one was allowed to do so"
— Sarah Saleh, LAS 110 Student

Democracy only works when everyone participates. UIC Student Leadership and Civic Engagement supports students in using their right to vote, and in actively contributing to their communities. Through resources and programs for voter registration, education, and participation, we support students in making their voices heard and being informed and active citizens.

Virtual LAS Career Development Events

The Health Professions Forum is a series of educational and networking events designed to offer our UIC undergraduate students an opportunity to network with professionals in health related fields. In an effort to widen the perspective of careers with a bachelor’s degree, we are inviting a number of professionals from diverse specialties and settings such as hospitals, clinics, government, non-profits, business, and more to share paths, perspectives, and best practices. Professionals will also share insights about direct transitions to careers and/or advanced degrees. Check out the upcoming programs:
