What Are You Reading or Listening To?
|
|
|
"One of my most recent favorite reads is Brit Bennett’s The Vanishing Half, published in June 2020. The Vanishing Half tells the story of twin sisters who leave behind their (fictional), interracial hometown of Mallard where passing as white the way of life for residents. Bennett creates a world where internalized racism within communities, interracial families, and even self-perceptions drive one sister to pass as white and the other as black as they leave their hometown in search of self-belonging. Besides race, the book shows how "passing" as it relates to any single identity (gender, socioeconomic, etcetera) is more complex than we often feel comfortable letting on. A must read for 2020!"
-Lisa James, LAS 110 Instructor

"I love listening to Latinos Who Lunch because it is co-hosted by a Latinx artist and historian. It is co-hosted by Emmanuel Ortega (he is actually a UIC professor!) Their episodes vary and they talk about culture, media, food, history, social justice, and food!"
-Alejandra Salas, LAS 110 Instructor

Welcome to LAS 110: Experience UIC!
|
|
You are a part of the UIC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences community — wherever you may be this fall: in the classroom, meeting with faculty, using our great tutoring resources; across the campus, the city of Chicago, Illinois, and beyond; and online with our weekly LAS 110 classes and this resource, LAS 110 News. Each week LAS 110 News will share tips, help you navigate your first-semester, and explore how to Experience UIC during this unique fall semester.
LAS 110 is designed for first-year students to:
-
Identify and utilize UIC programs, resources, and services that will support their academic success, personal needs, and co-curricular campus involvement.
-
Explore strengths, abilities, values, and motivation and apply this self-knowledge to personal and academic goal-setting.
-
Practice professional and effective ways to communicate with UIC faculty, staff and peers to build a sense of belonging, foster community, and create a support network.
-
Learn about the value of a liberal arts and sciences education and the purpose of general education. Students will develop a plan that demonstrates their responsibility for their own education and how the academic curriculum connects to their personal and professional interests.
