Opening Gardens During a Pandemic in Brooklyn

With the goal of improving local streetscapes, Brooklyn Public Library worked to open gardens all over Brooklyn during the pandemic. Authored by the library's supervising librarian for inclusive services, Carrie Banks, our ULC blog post showcases how pandemic closures gave BPL a unique opportunity to beautify their outdoor space.

Using VR Goggles to Visualize Rising Sea in Seattle
Seattle Public Library

Through the Our Future Duwamish project and in partnership with The University of Washington and Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle Public Library uses two Oculus Quest 2 goggles to help viewers imagine rising sea levels from a vantage point along the South Seattle waterway. The VR experience expands on a SPL project that used historical photos, maps and artifacts to show the history of the Duwamish River.

Summer Reading Kickoff

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh held their Summer Reading Kickoff earlier this month after a two-year hiatus! The all-age event Extravaganza returned with live performances, crafts, games, storytelling, food trucks, a scavenger hunt and more to mark the beginning of 2022 Summer Reading.
Empowering New AI Learners
Frisco Public Library

Frisco Public Library’s Thomas Finley is a guest speaker for Texas State Library and Archives Commission’s Library Tech Lunch & Learn on June 30. Attendees can learn how the library is empowering new AI learners for the future with their approach of circulating Maker Kit boxes, teaching accessible AI classes and holding outreach events. Frisco Public Library was awarded ULC’s 2019 Top Innovator Award for Customer Experience.
Honoring National Indigenous History Month
Calgary Public Library

Calgary Public Library honors National Indigenous History Month by providing resources so all Canadians may learn the true history of Indigenous peoples. With libraries playing a big role in community healing, truth and reconciliation, CPL offers Indigenous language books in their Treaty 7 Language Books collection, teaches Indigenous Placemaking at seven locations, offers keynote speakers and more.

If your library engages with local government to support the service area’s defined goals, fights for the inclusion of underserved populations and social cohesion and more, you are encouraged to apply! Library Journal’s Jerry Kline Community Impact Prize application closes on July 8, 2022. The winning library will receive $250,000 in unfettered grant monies from the Gerald M. Kline Family Foundation and will also be profiled in the November issue of Library Journal and online.
