TRUE PLAY AND SUMMER LEARNING CONNECT AT THE LIBRARY

Play Coalition

In a recently published blog for the Play Coalition, ULC's Senior Advisor Liz McChesney explores the idea of True Play — which is now becoming the method public libraries across the country are using for summer learning. True Play involves four critical skills: communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.

“Connecting play to the mission of the public library is just one of the many ways public libraries are moving beyond the bricks and mortar repository of books and into an active laboratory of experiential learning. This approach emphasizes risk-taking, problem-solving and the four critical 21st-century skills: communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity,” said McChesney.

Sonia Alcántara-Antoine Named PLA President

Baltimore County Public Library

Congratulations to Baltimore County Public Library Director Sonia Alcántara-Antoine for being named PLA President! Alcántara-Antoine began her three-year term this June, which includes one-year stints as president-elect (2022-2023), president (2023-2024) and immediate past-president (2024-2025).

“I am honored and humbled to be the next President Elect for the Public Library Association. Public libraries have an unparalleled role in directly dismantling the inequities that exist within our communities and society, and for defending the intellectual freedom rights that uphold our democracy. Public libraries are needed now more than ever. Ensuring Library Access for Students in Wichita

Wichita Public Library

Wichita Public Library recently announced a partnership with Wichita Public Schools to give all middle school and high school students the opportunity to opt-in for a public library eCard at enrollment. This partnership allows students access to the library’s collection of eBooks, audiobooks and research databases. “This partnership has been a long-time coming, and we’re really excited to provide a wealth of information and knowledge to middle and high school students in Wichita schools,” said Jaime Prothro, director of libraries for Wichita Public Library.
