PLASTIC FREE JULY

Are you up for the challenge?

Plastic Free July is an initiative that encourages people to work towards a plastic-free world. Plastics do not biodegrade. Instead, they break down into smaller particles called microplastics, which are harmful to our health and environment. We can help reduce plastic waste by making small changes to our everyday habits, such as refusing single-use items and switching to reusable items. For more #PlasticFreeJuly tips, check out the Plastic Free July page.

SUMMER'S HEATING UP, BUT LET'S KEEP THE HEAT OUT OF THE TRUCKS!

It’s not just the summer sun raising temperatures. Fires inside trash, recycling and organics trucks are on the rise. Items like coals, batteries, electronics and household chemicals can combust when they’re tossed in curbside carts not meant for hazardous material.

Our collection crews work inches from these hazards every day, and your choices at the curb help protect their safety and the safety of workers at our processing facilities. Before you toss anything that sparks, smokes or reacts, take a moment to check our Hazardous Waste 101 webpage for examples of combustibles and no-cost disposal options. Keep the heat on the grill, not in the truck.

HOLIDAY REMINDERS

Celebrate Safely

In order to keep City residents and visitors safe this 4th of July, all personal fireworks, even those deemed “Safe and Sane” are illegal and should not be used. Not only do fireworks contribute to noise pollution, but they also create waste and litter. Help keep Long Beach litter-free by attending a professional show instead.

Help Keep LB Litter Free

The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM), alongside the Department of Public Works’ Litter Free Long Beach, Long Beach Fire Department Junior Lifeguards and community partners including Aquarium of the Pacific and various neighborhood and community associations, will host a post-Independence Day beach and park cleanup on Sunday, July 5, 2026, from 9 to 11 a.m. As Long Beach gears up to celebrate the 250th of the United States of America, community members are encouraged to participate in the Independence from Litter cleanup after the big celebration.

This is a drop-in volunteer opportunity with no registration required. Gloves and trash bags will be provided to volunteers at each site, though participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable supplies, such as work gloves, buckets and grabbers to limit waste. Parking in City lots will be free for volunteers for the duration of the cleanup.
