Greeting from Dean Michele H. Jackson
|
As the semester draws to a close and the last leaves in the Sanford Natural Area behind my office tremble and fall to the ground, I am reminded of the beauty and power of transitions. Such times call us to appreciate where we have been, where we are, and where we hope to go.
Earlier this fall Briggs welcomed just over 600 students from all types of backgrounds. New students renew us with their passion for science and their enthusiasm for MSU. Every day they and their nearly 1,400 peers learn side-by-side in smaller classes, being challenged to communicate and think critically, and to consider how science and society impact one another.
Briggs is a special college, and I remain grateful for its community, for our students, and for alumni like you. The stories and profiles in this newsletter illustrate the distinction that all Briggsies can be proud of.
As we look to the future, I have no doubt our students and graduates will continue to make a difference in the world through a broad view of science in society. For that I’m certainly thankful. Happy Thanksgiving!

Earlier this fall, Sarah Dickinson joined Briggs as the Alumni and Donor Relations Coordinator. In this role, she works to engage and grow the alumni network within Lyman Briggs through strategic collaboration, thoughtful networking and special events. She partners with the MSU Alumni Office to further the mission of Lyman Briggs and coordinate a wide range of engagement opportunities for Briggs alumni.
Sarah's desire is to create a culture of lifelong connections that span the student continuum and are sustained into the alumni years. She also hopes to create a culture of volunteerism that will inspire, engage, and connect alumni to the university and to each other.

Briggs Student Advisory Council creates homecoming float
|
|
In anticipation of the 2019 MSU Homecoming Parade, members of the Briggs Student Advisory Council (SAC) created a float. The 2019 homecoming theme was "Spartans Inspire Success." Students on the SAC were inspired by successful Briggs alumni and highlighted a number of them through displaying photos and biographical information. The float was named "Briggs Inspires Success." The float took design cues from the periodic table, since 2019 marks the periodic table's 150th anniversary. Although the parade ended up being canceled by inclement weather, the students deserve a lot of credit for their work.

MSU alumnus establishes new endowment for LBC

Lyman Briggs College recently received a planned gift from attorney R. Claybourne Petrey, Jr. to establish the Claybourne Petrey STEM Scholarship. This scholarship, made via charitable bequest, will support students who promote the importance of the work of women in STEM.
For Petrey, choosing Lyman Briggs College to administer his scholarship came from a desire to positively impact the culture of women in STEM.
