Cabrillo Students Go Global at
3rd Annual Economic Summit
On Wednesday, December 18 th , Cabrillo High School hosted its 3 rd  Annual International Economic Summit. Over 100 sophomores participated and represented 25 different countries. The event was a collaborative effort between Jim Dowding, a teacher at Cabrillo, and Long Beach CaLL. Students, parents, staff and business partners heard inspiring welcoming remarks from Dr. Jay Camerino, LBUSD’s Assistant Superintendent of High Schools, who also led the energetic trading session kick-off.

The Econ Summit is a world trade simulation for high school students and is modeled after the curriculum from Boise State University. Students compete and learn the significance of globalization, international economics, and what it takes to make highly interdependent nations competitive in today’s dynamic global environment.

Student teams served as economic advisors with the goal of increasing their country’s prosperity. Students built trade alliances, secured resources through imports and exports, invested in long-term development projects, and tested their knowledge of geography, economics, and current events. After pre-summit assignments and event activities were completed, it was official: the top-scoring teams were Brazil, Venezuela and Democratic Republic of the Congo.
CaLL partnered with industry professionals to volunteer as judges at the competition. Partners represented a wide range of careers including the Vice President of Farmers & Merchants Bank, U.S. Army Staff Sergeants, and business partners from Leadership Long Beach. Judges evaluated table displays and costumes, and acted as bankers and scorekeepers as students transitioned through various activities.

Long Beach CaLL would like to thank all of the volunteers, teachers, student ambassadors, and parents, for contributing to such a meaningful learning experience.
Students Connect with Business Professionals
During Fall Mock Interviews
Long Beach CaLL partnered with Browning High School and PAAL Academy to organize two fall mock interview events on December 5 th  and December 9 th . Mock interviews give students a unique opportunity to practice and prepare for internship and job interviews with support from business professionals.

40 industry volunteers participated in the event as CaLL received a tremendous amount of support from Leadership Long Beach. Interviewers represented a broad array of industries and careers, and they provided students with constructive feedback on their interview style, first impressions, and responses to interview questions. Many students brought resumes, which business partners were able to review and provide suggestions for improvement.

Collectively, we were able to provide  106 students  an opportunity to interact with business professionals and build their interviewing skills. One student shared, “ I learned a lot from this experience. I actually felt confident after interviewing. All you have to do is believe in yourself.
We are grateful to all mock interviewers for volunteering their time to provide such a meaningful career experience to LBUSD students. Additional thanks goes to Jeff Williams from Leadership Long Beach, and to the following organizations who had  multiple volunteers : City of Long Beach, Farmers & Merchants Bank, IBI Group, and Long Beach Unified School District. We would also like to thank Michelle Gamboa from Browning High School, as well as
Kathleen Naruse, Brian George, and Nicole Lopez from PAAL Academy for helping organize events on their campuses.
