Dear Neighbors,
Over the weekend, Help Me Help You served 635 family members including 279 children with groceries at the monthly Grocery Grab N Go at Perry Lindsey Academy. The Grocery Grab N Go will take place from 12pm-2pm every third Saturday of the month. Let's spread the word and combat food insecurity in our community! The next event will be on Saturday, March 19th.
Today’s Black History highlight honors Clarence Smith. Smith moved to Long Beach when he was a teenager and excelled at sports at Poly High School. He then attended Long Beach City College where he met his wife. As a college student, he worked for Long Beach Parks and Recreation Department and continued working for the department for 35 years. In 1986, Smith became the second African American elected to the Long Beach City Council. He served on City Council from 1986 to 1992. In 1992, Doris Topsy- Elvord won his seat by 22 votes! Some of his notable policies included passing a moratorium on liquor stores in the 6th District and and organizing the city's first Martin Luther King Parade which is still celebrated today.
He was known to model respectfulness and value to the local youth.
Always working for a better Long Beach!
