Friends having fun and testing their Scrabble skills at one of our intergenerational CitySites programs-Hearth Four Corners in Dorchester

Dear Cynthia,

Welcome to the summer edition of LBFE Boston’s e-newsletter! As the sun shines bright and the days continue to warm us, we’re excited to share the latest updates, recent events, and inspiring stories from our vibrant community. This season, we’re focusing on the joy of connection and the many ways we can come together to support and enrich the lives of older adults in our city. Dive in and help us make a difference this summer!

In June, Creative Connections classes successfully wrapped up at various sites including Veronica Smith Senior Center (drumming), 70 St. Botolph (painting), and Bellflower Apartments (dancing). A new painting class at Brighton Marine started in July, while Patricia White and Lower Mills Apartments continued their painting classes with residents eager to bring out their creativity. When asked what motivates Mary to keep coming every week, she says, “It’s a fun and relaxing creative outlet for me. I forget a lot of my problems when I’m here, taking the time to paint with other people in my building.”

Our friends at American Tower Corp sent a box with handmade summer greeting cards, decorated windchimes, and birdhouses from employees to older adults in our programs. It brought smiles to those who opened the cards and were well received by older tech learners at East Boston Senior Center as we passed them out during our Digital Dividends class.

MEET OUR FRIEND, MAGGIE

"Her career was diverse and fulfilling, including managing an office for a lawyer and judge in San Francisco, teaching fourth grade in New York City, and working in early childhood education in California.”

Residents at Farnsworth House gathered at our CitySites program to celebrate Estelle’s birthday with cupcakes and ice cream!

After the celebration, we separated into smaller groups and played games like dominos and Chinese checkers.

PUBLISHED BY BOSTON UNIVERSITY This past spring, two students from Boston University collaborated with LBFE Boston for a multimedia reporting project for their graduate global health storytelling course.

In their research, Zichang Liu and Julia McCrone investigated the benefits of regular meetings between groups of college students and local older adults participating in LBFE Boston's programs. Read & watch their published work, "The Domino Effects of Intergenerational Relationships Among Boston's Residents."

BAY STATE BANNER recently connected with us to learn how programs help relieve isolation and loneliness and positively impact the physical, emotional, & mental health of older adults.

According to new research cited from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, chronically lonely adults are at higher risk for strokes. Yet another, of many, many reasons to support LBFE Boston and help us bring social, digital equity/literacy, and arts programs to older adults!

NEW PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Stephenie Hisman-Hou has been promoted to Program Director! Now in her sixth year with LBFE Boston, in this new role Stephenie is responsible for expanding our programs to new universities and senior housing buildings/centers, as well as maintaining the success of our current programs: CitySites, Digital Dividends, Creative Connections, and eventually Gen2GenQ. Congrats, Stephenie!

MEET OUR NEW CO-OPS from Northeastern University, Jeremy, Laiying, Mackenzie, and Xinyi, who will be working at LBFE Boston until the end of December. What are some of their goals?

-"Develop my leadership skills

-Learn from others

-Deepen my empathy and understanding of the diverse challenges faced by older adults

-Facilitate engaging and different activities for older adults"

They, along with our summer intern sponsored by the Forest Foundation, Joey Monti from Boston College, have been essential to our Program Team and we look forward to seeing them grow in their leadership roles.

Our summer appeal is in full swing, please support LBFE Boston’s mission today! To date, we have raised nearly $11,000!

Whether through CitySites and intergenerational friendships, Digital Dividends and online socializing that comes with digital literacy, or Creative Connections and art-inspired conversations between neighbors, LBFE Boston’s nationally recognized programs are a catalyst for connecting older adults to each other and the larger world. Thank you for supporting our 2nd Annual Giving Day!

Stay involved with our programs and participants. One of the easiest ways to support LBFE Boston and our mission is to follow us on social media, comment and share our posts! The more that happens, the more future supporters we can reach! Thank you :-)
