Leading Stellar Pathways 2024 Update

At the start of 2024, the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) unveiled a revamped version of their Stellar Communities Program, now called Stellar Pathways. This was the moment Sherri Johnston, President of the LaGrange County Economic Development Corporation (LCEDC), and Emilee Buller, Vice President of Community Development and Engagement, had been waiting for. After hearing time and time again from granting agencies that LaGrange County had not previously been funded and that interest in our area was growing, they knew it was time to act.

Together, they launched Connect LaGrange County, a countywide effort aimed at securing the Stellar Pathways designation. In May, Emilee submitted a comprehensive 21-page Letter of Intent and Narrative to OCRA, outlining the county’s vision for progress. By June, they received the exciting news – LaGrange County was one of only four finalists in the state!

Since then, the Connect LaGrange County team has been hard at work, organizing several stakeholder and steering group meetings, and engaging with the community through a variety of channels. Their online survey drew over 1,050 responses, and they hosted five public input meetings. They also participated in local events, including Chamber luncheons, the LaGrange Council on Aging luncheon, Corn School, a fish fry and football games, ensuring that they heard from a broad range of residents and stakeholders. Additionally, the team presented at Town and County Council meetings and gathered letters of support from across the county.

As the process nears its final stages, Connect LaGrange County will submit their Strategic Investment Plan to OCRA on November 1st. On December 3rd, the team will travel to Indianapolis to present to the granting agencies and show them what makes LaGrange County truly STELLAR!

Two communities will be selected to receive $7.2 million each in grant funding. Coupled with pledged match dollars, this designation could result in nearly $10 million of investment into transformative quality of life and place projects for LaGrange County.

For more information about the Stellar Pathways program, potential projects, letters of support or funding sources, please reach out to Emilee Buller at ebuller@lagrangecountyedc.com or 260-499-4994. Let’s continue to work together to make LaGrange County the best place to live, work, and thrive!

Made in LaGrange - PalletOne

PalletOne, a member of UFP Industries, has its roots in Shipshewana, Indiana, where it originally operated as Shipshewana Hardwoods. Established in the early 1970s by Josey Bontrager, the company began as a small-scale pallet manufacturer and has since evolved into one of the largest new pallet manufacturers in the United States. As a vital part of logistics, new pallets serve as the backbone for shipping goods across various sectors.

From the beginning, PalletOne has experienced significant growth. Starting with just a handful of employees—Josey’s wife, Judy, and Josey’s dad—the company now employs over 70 full-time workers. The first pallets were produced using only a hammer and nails.

In recent years, PalletOne has produced over one million pallets annually, generating sales exceeding $20 million. Team members consistently work over 40 hours a week, even in slower economic times, as pallets are essential for moving a wide range of products, from raw materials to finished goods.

Like many businesses, PalletOne has faced challenges, particularly in sourcing labor. To address this issue, the company has focused on automation and streamlining processes, which not only improve efficiency but also help maintain productivity despite labor shortages.

PalletOne is dedicated to serving the local community in LaGrange County. The company provides residuals from its sawmill operations to local consumers and businesses, offering products such as colored mulch for landscaping, sawdust for animal bedding, and wood chunks for home heating.

Local residents can find PalletOne pallets being utilized by various businesses, including farms that bag seed corn and manufacturers that print graphics for popular cereal brands. In winter, you might even see PalletOne pallets under bags of ice melt. However, most of our customers produce raw materials for other manufacturers.

While PalletOne is a larger company with over fifty locations, the Shipshewana facility stands out due to its deep ties to the local manufacturing community. Many of the employees have lifelong experience in manufacturing, with family backgrounds in recreational vehicle production, modular homes, supplying materials to manufacturing businesses, and woodworking. This knowledge leads to a better foundational understanding for our team members. These skills give PalletOne a unique advantage in understanding production efficiencies and lean manufacturing practices.

PalletOne’s journey from a small family-run operation to a significant player in the pallet manufacturing industry showcases the importance of local roots, community connections, and a commitment to innovation. As the company continues to grow, it remains dedicated to supporting local residents and businesses, ensuring that it plays a vital role in both the economy and the community.

Agriculture Heritage Trail

The LaGrange County Economic Development Corporation and the LaGrange County Convention and Visitors Bureau are working collaboratively to develop a LaGrange County Agricultural Heritage Trail which will celebrate the people, history, places and density of the LaGrange County agricultural story. When completed, this trail will feature over 60 agricultural experiences including farm tours, produce stands, farmers markets, and farm-to-table dining options throughout the entire LaGrange County area.

The Ag Heritage tour will focus on the eastern and southern portions of the county, starting with the small towns and then branching out to some of the surrounding farms. The LaGrange County Agricultural Heritage Trail is being developed to be interesting and engaging while including as many actual on-farm experiences as possible while showcasing the area’s young farmers and producers to support the future farm families and generations to come. Some of the locations include Cook’s Bison Ranch, Shipshewana Livestock Auction, Topeka Livestock Auction, LaGrange County Fair, Pine Knob Park, David Rogers Memorial Park, barns with barn quilts, Hoosier Homestead Farms, and many others.

For more information about the LaGrange County Agricultural Heritage Trail or to express interest in being listed on the trail, please reach out to Sonya Nash, LaGrange County Convention & Visitors Bureau, sonya@lagrangecountycvb.org or (260)768-4008.
